I have two "favorites".

First, I still own a very good Domke vest that I bought 25 years ago. It has huge pockets, a ventilated back, and allows me to go without my gear bag a lot.

Second, I own a couple of the discontinued Cabelas Safari Vests. They're comfortable for everyday wear, especially when I'm carrying a single camera and a couple of lenses. They used to have them in the "Bargain Basement", but they've even disappeared from there. I did find one on eBay.

Both are great, even in the winter. I put on a hoodie beneath them, and a long sleeve shirt, and I'm good to go. I hate the idea of a smartphone holster, and would rather carry it in one of the roomy breast pockets.

BTW - I carry a concealed pistol most of the time, and neither vest ever "prints" the outline of my weapon.

Hmmmm, you must take photos in some pretty "tough" areas...

For some years I used a multipocketed travel vest. But then a few years ago I decided to go more pro looking, and the fact that since my surgery (5 years ago) I can't bear any significant weight on my neck, I bought a Domke vest with lots of pockets. As others have mentioned, when the temperature/humidity is too high I use one of my roll around cases if I need to bring extra gear. And yes, I made my own generic event photographer/all access/parking ID!

Can you post a picture of your generic ID?

I bought a vest that had a Velcro closure on almost every pocket. I found it a pain getting into them with one hand (my other hand was always holding my camera or some other piece of equipment) and when I got it open it closed by itself before I could put something in. Very annoying and a frustrating waste of time.

I solved the problem by buying a matching strip of Velcro from a fabric store and cutting little pieces which match the ones on the pockets. When attached to one side (either the hook side or the loop side) they prevented the pocket flap from being locked in the closed position.

When I wanted the pocket to be secured I just removed the attached piece and put it in the pocket ready to be used again when required.

I frequently go into Detroit to shoot photos of the urban decay that's not discussed on TV by the local stations. They tout the new renaissance in the city's center, but I can take you to places within four miles of dead center downtown, and they look like war zones. There are streets that haven't been resurfaced in more than 20 years within sight of the GM Center (old Renaissance Center).

Houses are still falling down, literally, and violence is still very high. One of the tricks the bad guys use, is to steal a truck, then use it to back into a liquor or convenience store to get at the ATMs. They'll do $25K worth of damage for maybe $500 cash in the ATM. And these guys are organized, not just random.

There have been improvements, especially at Belle Island. However, that urban jewel was taken over by the state, and turned into a state park. The first thing the state did, was to start patrols by the Michigan State Police. The crime there has really fallen, and the riff-raff are looking at other opportunities. It also helps that you have to pay a $10 state park user fee.

Well Dennis, I hope you took some photos of the old Michigan train station. Or how about the old Packard plant?A good photo shoot would be to take some photos of all our very old churches in Detroit. There's a lot of history there.
Stay safe.....

This is the one I made a few years ago. I'm designing a new one that will a look a lot more like current ones in use. The new one will be white with a border and a photo, the old one has served me well, but it's time for an update.

I have parked in some unusual places where parking is normally not allowed, but haven't tried to go for free parking. yet. But when people, like security, see I am wearing this tag they almost always leave me to do my "work." It's just for fun, but it does seem effective.

I wore one on the auto race circuit covering from Florida to Canada... In the south during spring/summer it became another layer of holding in the heat...I eventually went to a ThinkTank dual camera strap and had a belt with lens bag carrying water or whatever

I have used the Campco Humvee Photo Vests I purchased from Adorama. They are not terribly expensive. One note is you intend to use it this time of year get a size or two larger than you actually might normally wear so allow for winter coats and clothing. So after you finish shooting foot ball games save it, in the event you decide to shoot baseball. The baseball seasons begin so early, it is still cold. On several occasions I have photographed baseball games at the start of the game it was sleeting, that later turned to snow before the end of the game. I have used a small bag but the sidelines on most high school football games are so crowded I fear for damage from players. If you photograph from the sidelines you usually move to follow game play.
