I ask this with some trepidation anticipating some ridicule...

I will be photographing some high school sports soon. Would it be good to wear a vest to hang my press pass on and carry around some crap? Kind of look the part and differentiate myself from the parents on the sidelines with cell phones and what not. Most of these vests are hilarious. What am I going to do with 21 pockets and zipper handles dangling everywhere? I was hoping to find something kind of simple. Do any of you guys wear them in this setting like sports or events?

Well, the snarky answer is to show up wearing an old baseball cap from an out of town sports team (not of the sport you are shooting). Have a pronounced 5 0'clock shadow, smell of a stale beer, and mock anyone who either: 1) Has any camera that is not full frame and cannot shoot at least 8 fps, 2) Has any emotional attachment to any particular action either on the field or in the general vicinity, or 3) Has the audacity to ask you what settings, lens focal length, or camera you are using.

The mockage along with the stale beer will be enough to make you look like a "PRO".

THIS RESPONSE IS TOTALLY TONGUE IN CHEEK!!!

I actually have two. Two different sizes, but both the same design and manufacturer. The reason is the smaller of the two won't fit over a jacket. The larger of the two will. I don't use them as much. If I'm taking film cameras, yes. Digital just doesn't require as much other stuff. I just hang whatever ID I need on a bead chain around my neck.

Bought one made by the Vest Guy from Adorama to use in lieu of my backpack from Manfrotto but returned the vest the next day. It was well made but way too bulky and I felt and looked kind of stupid in it (probably not the vest’s fault) I’m going to stay with the backpack or if I want to dress up my Billingsley.

I have worn them in the past (Domke), whilst covering motor sport.
You will soon find a use for a lot of the pockets.
Does the school provide vests so you can be readily identifed from a distance?
Another alternative may be a harness/belt system (like Think Tank) to carry your gear.

I wear a Big Pockets vest - very pleased with it - can carry lots of gear and it's not one where I need a map to figure out where I put stuff

Maybe look at some fishing vests instead, there are simple versions available, but are similar to photo vests in what they offer. They are problably also less expensive!

Google "Event Photographer T-shirt". I was shooting an event outdoors. I was the "official" guy but no credentials so bought one from CafePress for about $15-18, red with bright green lettering. (They may come long-sleeved too). Only used it the one time, but hanging in my closet if needed. If doing football, get a size larger and wear over a long-sleeve shirt?

Oh, it got me a couple free beers so almost broke even on the shirt part.

I had one decades ago, received as a gift.
Never used it cuz it would only fit Leica M
or small stuff like that. So I parted with it.
Now I'm really into m43 and I wish I still
had it ...

This is what I use. Few zippers, a lot more flaps and velcro. I highly recommend it. I also use it for airplane travel, does not count as a carry on!

A vest is better than pants pockets--and way better than setting something down
and losing it.

Wear your pass on a lanyard around your neck, so you don't have to fish it out
and won't lose it if you take off your jacket or vest.

If it's a night game, some kind of hat will keep the lights out of your eyes.

Try to get there early, to familiarize yourself with access to the field, and
introduce yourself to all the security people (maybe not much at a school,
but who knows these days).

If there's an opportunity, introduce yourself to the officials, and find if field
encroachment is big deal or not.. It's pretty easy to step over that line while
filming.

Oh, and some of those big-school league high school players are HUGE.
Largest said to be 7 foot, 440 lbs. But not too fast--you probably can get out
of the way.

I wear a hunting vest when shooting outdoors for easy access to lenses, filters, memory, etc. Don’t know about using one indoors.

I have one, but have not used it in about 10 years. I use a backpack, all of the time, now.
