Another option on Kauai is in an open cockpit Waco biplane. Look at the option on this web page - https://kauaiairtour.com/. I've ridden with them twice, once with my wife and once with my brother. As the pilot told us the first time, "I fly slower than the helicopters do." Tremendous views and the plane is a unique way to see the island. Riding with my brother was great, I got much more information on the geology of the island from him that I had received on a number of previous visits. Of course, the fact that he's a geologist didn't hurt. :-)

We did the "Big Kahuna" in the Airvan, and I rode as the copilot. The Waco looks like fun; I may do it this July.

I grew up there, but now live on the Mainland. I've gone back with my Nikon D500 and the 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6 lens if I don't mind the weight; I've also taken my Sony a6300 with the f/4 18-105mm lens. No need for more than one lens, but I do think the longer telephoto gives more options.

Also the post about Kauai (above) is not totally accurate. Only on Mount Waialaele (sp?) is there that much rain :-).

I've enjoyed Hawaii a number of times. My added thought is to be sure that you bring a lens that allows a reasonably close focus distance. The flowers are stunning and they are different than the ones we see on the Mainland.

Enjoy your trip,
Aloha

Planing A trip to Hawaii in March 2019. What to pack as far as lens s I plan on taking my Tamron 95mm, Nikon 10-20mm Nikon 70-300 and photo . gear. Have to leave the 150-600 home.

I took my 150-600 sigma sport when we went to Hawaii a couple of years ago. Hawaii has a huge amount of birds that you are unlikely to see anywhere else and the extra reach is important, especially for some of the smaller birds. Also if you take a boat tour you may find the big lens to be useful. It also works to take photos of big waves. I used that lens a lot on our trip.

As far as the rest of your lens selection I would leave the 70-300 behind as the 150-600 covers most of it's range and more and would look at taking a 24-70. I know a lot of people don't want to carry the extra weight on a trip, but my view is that is exactly what you bought the lens for.
