I took a 18-200 & 70-300, you have most focal lengths covered.

Having been to Hawaii several times, what jumps out at me is you don't have anything between 20mm and 70mm. The 95mm Tamron is covered in your 70-200mm. so I would leave that one at home. I would take a wide-angle zoom something like an 18-70mm and your 70-200mm tele-zoom and that way you have good coverage during the whole range with just two lenses. If you plan to do whale-watching, you are going to want the full range coverage because you never know how far away they will be.

The more I use the 18-135 on my Sony A6000 crop sensor, the more I find that I don't need much else. Also found this to be the case with the 18-135 on the Canon 70D. If I were going to Hawaii I would take it and the 55-210 and have all I need. For the Nikon, their 18-140 would probably fill the bill very well. It gets good reviews and for under 500 it is affordable.

I've been there several times, and I never took a DSLR. I brought a small camera that would fit into a belt case of a pocket. I enjoyed the trip and got good pictures. I like to travel light - a backpack for my stuff and a camera in my pocket.

Spent September in Europe (Austria and German Alps) and all I took was an 18-135mm and it was all I ever needed for ~98% of the photos. If I wanted for another lens, it would have been a wider angle lens.

Only take a point and shoot camera. Don’t think you can do better than the pros that live there. Also, you are time restricted and can’t in any way compete with someone who has the luxury of being in one location for a week or more.

I spent three years in Hawaii when I was in the Air Force stationed at Hickam AFB. But that was back in 1965 to 1968. No digital cameras back then. Took what I had at the time - an Exakta camera, 58mm Zeiss lens and a 200mm telephoto lens. Came back with about a thousand slides but if I had my current digital I would have at least ten times that many photos.

Oh, BTW, I want to thank you taxpayers for funding my Hawaii trip.

I was sent to Hawaii in 1990 when I worked at Mare Island shipyard. There was a submarine at Pearl Harbor that needed repairs and MI was picked to do the job. Another taxpayer funded trip to Hawaii. Bad part was they were in a hurry to get the job done so it was 12 hour days, 7 days a week for 6 weeks. Not much time for touring or picture taking.

You might want to consider a cheap underwater camera, maybe even a one time underwater film camera if they’re still available. If you go in the water there are beautiful fish.

If you plan to go to Kuaui, make sure you have enough ways to keep the gear dry.. They get 480" of rain a year. We had a video camera and it took me three days to dry it out. The Exakta did better, but the short zoom fogged up and had to be dismantled to be dried.

I don't think that most of us who travel are trying to "compete" with anyone. Rather, we just want to get the quality of images that we are used to with our own equipment. If halkeye is willing to carry the stated equipment, what benefit would be received by following your suggestion?

Me too, mostly with the 18-200 VR ll, even on a “doors off” helicopter tour of Kauai.

We've been to Hawaii 22 times (23 coming in January) over the years. I use the 18-135 mm lens for my Canon T5i the vast majority of the time. The only time I get anything longer out of the backpack is when I'm trying to take pictures of whales, and then the 250 mm max on that lens isn't long enough. You really don't need a bunch of lenses, but do add a CP filter to your kit. You will quickly find that you do want that.

The suggestion of a waterproof camera for underwater pictures is a good one. I use my GoPro for that. Works great. Keep in mind that you do need a way to keep your camera dry. There is a wet side to the big island, as well. No where near the 480 inches a year that the north shore of Kauai gets, but it is much wetter than the dry side (Kona, etc.).

BTW, I hope that part of Hawaii Volcanoes NP is open by the time you get there. It is well worth the time to visit. I've seen it from the ground and from the air (as PIC of a light plane) several times over the years. It would be great to see how it has changed due to the recent eruptions.
