Remberence Sunday 11 11 2018

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.
If you wish feel free to add your lost family hero's name.
My Grandfather
WW1 Casualty: Private 12615 Samuel Thomas Heyes
Gallipoli. killed 10 August 2015

Guess my forebears were lucky, both grandfather's were in WW1, one a stoker in the RN, the other was a Sapper (Royal Engineers) who was gassed... The first day of WW2 my father told me he had them all in their air-raid shelter wearing gas masks...

This has tremendous emotional impact. Thanks for sharing it Jim.

BTW I hadn't heard of Gallipoli until I visited the extraordinary exhibit at the Te Papa Museum in Wellington, NZ a year ago. Now your reference has new meaning, and I have a better understanding of the futility of that battle. No one can experience the exhibit without being deeply moved by the sacrifice of so many in that and all wars.

Thank you for looking in Vicki and indeed this was a brutal battle. The story that we where told about my Grandfathers death came from a great uncle of mine who was also at Gallipoli was that Samuel was on the beach leading two pack horses probably carrying ammunition, there was a huge explosion and he was gone, his body was never found and there where hundreds if not thousands of this sort of thing happening all the time.Samuel was the father of five children my mother being one of them aged from 2 years to 15 years.Such a terrible waste of lives .

Thanks for posting this - here in the States there is barely any mention of WWI - it's like it never happened.
