Imho, Nikon service is not the best. My new D810 was sent in for a rattle in the flash. Nikon stated it was not a defect and did nothing, returned it to me. Nikon corporate was contacted but to no avail. In the end, It still rattles. Everything work so I can't complain.

So exactly why are you complaining here?????

It wasn't a complaint, it was a comment regarding my experience with Nikon service.
The proper response should be:
We are so sorry about your unfortunate experience. Here is a new 500, please let us know if there is anything else we can do to.
sincerely,
Nikon USA
While I have not had many problems since 2011 when I got my first DSLR, I have a few times needed some repairs.
All of my repairs have been done at Kurt's Camera Repair in San Diego. They are very friendly, fast and very high quality.
I was told of this place by a good photographer friend of mine who happened to be in the Navy with the owner, Mike. They bother were photographers.
I would never ever send my gear to Nikon.
I have used Nikon repair services in California as well as NY and I have only wonderful words to say about them. The turn around time is usually less than two weeks and I have sent them some complicated cases.

I've sent quite a bit of equipment to Nikon for service over the years: Hey, I drop stuff too! Sometimes it was just a clean & check, and other times some level of repair. I've had a D5 since they were first released which is used fairly hard and often. It's been back to Nikon twice for issues/repair, once requiring a shutter replacement. I am very pleased with Nikon repair although I do have a small leg up as I am an NPS member which is advantageous. NPS membership is without charge as long as you meet the conditions/criteria. Although I have no personal experience, I'd be willing to bet Canon service is equal. Best of luck.
No problems with my D5, however, it works better when you send it directly to Nikon and you are the customer and not the store.
I have used Nikon repair in LA very few times but turn around and customer service was excellent.
There's more to the story. Nikon provides wonderful repair service and they respond to inquiries. It may not have been sent to Nikon. It may be a gray market. Your friend isn't giving you the whole story. He may have bought it at 42nd Street Photo or someplace like it.

My friend has a Nikon D5 and it started giving him problems. Some time, it just would not take a photo.
Push the button and nothing happens. Gave him different error messages each time. He when through our local camera store where he purchased it and they sent it to Nikon for repair.
That was three months ago and Nikon has not fixed it. Nikon now says they do not have parts for the D5 and do not know when they will be able to repair it. You would think they would make sure that they could fix their high priced professional cameras timely.
Hope mine does not have any problems in the near future.

I never hear a good word about the service Nikon provides. You would hope, there would be a revolt by their customers, which could possibly wake them up. How do you not have parts for one of their high end cameras? I would try and contact Consumer Affairs to see if you have some type of recourse.
I don't know your sources because this is the first bad thing I've heard, I've heard about issues that were resolved and many good reports. I have sent in old lenses that came back
like new and very quickly. Something is fishy about this, someone has a story about someone else who has a problem with someone else who is blaming Nikon. Sounds like a shop selling imports with Joe blow in a Nikon shirt claiming to be a rep.

How about a follow up report as to what the final outcome was and what really happened in this matter??
