My friend has a Nikon D5 and it started giving him problems. Some time, it just would not take a photo.

Push the button and nothing happens. Gave him different error messages each time. He when through our local camera store where he purchased it and they sent it to Nikon for repair.

That was three months ago and Nikon has not fixed it. Nikon now says they do not have parts for the D5 and do not know when they will be able to repair it. You would think they would make sure that they could fix their high priced professional cameras timely.

Hope mine does not have any problems in the near future.

Are you sure it went to Nikon? Seems a bit fishy.

I agree that it does sound fishy. But yes, it went to Nikon. The Nikon rep was at the camera store and is the one that told him of their problems with parts.

Kind of sounds like your camera store sent it to a third party for repair...

That is very wrong on Nikon to NOT have an Efficient Service & Repair Dept.

Get the repair information from the dealer and contact Nikon your self to get more accurate information

He tried that. Nikon would not discuss with him since he did not send it in. They did tell him they have it and are working on it, but nothing else.

This is the kind of thing that makes me glad I'm not a professional. If I were I might seriously have to go Canon simply because I hear they have excellent service for Pros, at a fee of course. With (my) Pentax you are more or less on your own. But I never seem to have a breakdown anyway, film or digital! And had your friend been using a Nikon F5 instead of a D5 they probably have no problems!

twillsol, I would tell your friend to go directly to NIKON USA and get from them an explanation. The D5 is one of the top Nikon professional cameras in the market and I can't believe they are taking that long of a time to fix the camera. Something is really fishy in this story. When you get an answer from Nikon USA please share it with us in this forum.Thank you and good luck.

The Nikon D5 is as we all know a professional camera. I wonder if the same answer you got would have been the answer to a working professional. A professional needs his tools to make a living.
Whenever I have an issue with my cameras or lenses I send them to Authorized Photo Service out of Morton Groove, Illinois. They only repair Nikon cameras and lenses, are an authorized service station, their prices are acceptable and the turn around is pretty fast.

I dont think we can expect the same level of service for cameras. Canon I believe supports pros. Nikon used to be great.
Most cameras are made for them in Thailand, China etc. I believe that Nikon lost facilities since the tragedy of the storm
and the nuclear power plant. It is a new world. The expectations of the past don't always work.
I have some legacy Nikon. But all my working equipment is Sony. Moderate use. Some paying work.
And my own work. Have never had to send something back to Sony.

The D5 went out of production at their Sendai, Japan facility in July 2018. But it is still Nikons flagship Pro camera and readily serviced by Nikon USA. This whole story sounds fishy in several ways. I deal with Nikon in LA regularly and parts come to them through Nikon Japans regular supply outlets and repair delays are very infrequent. I just got a D5 back from them 2 weeks ago that had been dropped in a pool and was DOA, they completely renovated it with a new PCB and several other parts and had it back in 13 days, at a cost of $1600. But that was a lot less than replacement!

My experience is somewhat similar. I sent my 200-500 to check out the AF function.
My frustration was that I really couldn't talk to Melville. Once you get a service order number you can go on line to check what ever cryptic information they release. I ended up calling the 800 number which is their call center in PA. They have to contact Melville.
Anyway they had parts back ordered for over 3 weeks. I found it hard to believe that a currently in-production unit would have to wait 3 weeks for parts. Sounds like I'm lucky.

In the end they replaced 6 major components in the lens.
When I got it back, to my dismay, it had a noticeable internal, physical issue which they seem to have corrected. But it took an additional trip back to Melville.

Yeah, I would never go through a third party to have something repaired. As for Nikon not having the parts, that's possible, although surprising considering how new the camera is.

I never hear a good word about the service Nikon provides. You would hope, there would be a revolt by their customers, which could possibly wake them up. How do you not have parts for one of their high end cameras? I would try and contact Consumer Affairs to see if you have some type of recourse.
