If you want to try and salvage you R2000, get a flushing liquid kit from InkJetMall. And get Qimage SW. It will let you print swatches of color from whichever color(s) you select.
Repeated printing of the clogged colors, (using the flushing fluid), over several days, will maybe clear your clogged head.
Qimage will also let you schedule daily printing of small swatches of each color to keep heads clear, using MUCH less ink than Epson cleaning cycles.
I believe I still have a set of refillable carts for the R2000. If I can find them, you can have them for half new price. PM if interested.

If you can easily remove the print head and have access to an ultrasonic cleaner (used for cleaning jewelry and pens), that can be effective. K&E made a popular one that you can still occasionally find on EBay, and larger ones are available. My personal experience has been that the Canon dye printers like the 9000 and Pro 100 can go for months of non use without clogging, but maybe I’ve just been lucky!

Me also with Canon printers

If the print head is cheap enough you could replace it.
The commercial printers, at least the Canon ones, go through a nozzle cleaning cycle all by themselves while they sleep, as long as they’re plugged in.
Of course all are way over a thousand dollars but looks like you’ve spent that much already!!! And they print for WAY cheaper and better but of course cost a lot more!!!
Maybe stay with the cheap little rebate throw-aways! Good luck

The op could also purchase qimage Wich has a cycle to keep it from clogging. Probably the same idea that Canon uses.

Haven't owned an inkjet printer for several years. For just regular photo printing like you would do at home I use Walmart. I can upload my pics and pick them up later. For anything meaningful I send it to a service to get exhibition quality or to sell.

So, - Does anyone know of a solution for #3 before it's too late? ...

I also have a R2000 and have had to deal with clogged heads a few times. It's not hard to deal with.

Turn on the printer then pull the power cord so the head is not locked and move it away from the parking area. Fold up a paper towel to dimensions of the parking area, then spray it with Windex to make it fairly moist. Position the soaked towel in the parking area and push the head so it sits over the towel and let it sit for 10 or 15 minutes. Move the head away and the towel should be saturated with ink. Remove it and throw it away. Repeat a few more times with fresh paper towels. Try printing at this point. If it's still clogged, repeat the towel exercise above.

It works pretty well, and you'll get some idea of how much excess ink gets thrown around. You'll likely appreciate that it was probably a good thing to got through this cleaning even if it weren't clogged.

I have a Epson Stylus Photo 1500W and the jets block due to long periods of not using, my method to clean the jets is to get Head Cleaning fluid mine is called Pristine Fluid.
Soak a paper towel with it and place under the Heads leave overnight to unblock the jets. If you want to just clean one colour jet ( color ) Load text into a word processor change the text colour to the required one and then print out.

I have had Epson printers for 30 years. I quit seriously printing 3 years ago. I started back a month ago and I cranked up my Epson 3880 pro that had been idle and covered for more than a year. It took off like a champ and when I used the Epson Print Layout application my prints reached another level. I have a second home some 300 plus miles away and I wanted to be able to print there also. The Epson has a large footprint so I opted for a Canon Pro-100 mostly because it was much less expensive. I was advised to buy some metallic Canon paper and to use the Canon Print Studio Pro. The prints are fantastic and I couldn't be happier. So Canon and Epson are both great brands in my opinion.

Inkjet Plumber is a great little app for Macs that will print color patches daily.
And it's free.
Saves lot's of money on ink.
Cleaning cycles gobble ink.

I know this sounds sarcastic, and I don't mean it that way. But that's exactly why I own a Canon printer. Mine sits for weeks - sometimes months - and always prints correctly. I have an Epson (a free gift) sitting in my living room that I haven't looked at yet. The gifter had it for about 5 years and never used it. I'm almost afraid to try! We have HP's at my church, and we're having trouble getting good prints from them also.

I used to try to keep the inkjets going, but always had difficulty like you describe. I usually print about 20 to 30 14 x 11s, and 2 or 3 larger images per year. I give all my printing work to Nation's Photo Lab and have never been disappointed.
