Both of those lenses that you are considering are in the same zoom range your current lens has. I would think this is enough unless you have a specific reason for needing those focal lengths. If I were you I would try to buy a lens that is not inside the zoom range of your current lens. Since you can't afford a larger zoom right now, perhaps you could think in terms of a wide angle lens like the 10-22mm or 10-18mm wide angle zooms. Or if you do need or want more focal length, there are some entry level zooms that go as high as 300mm.
Both of those lenses that you are considering are ... (show quote)

For the OP the 24, 40 and 50 would all be faster and easier to handle than the 18-135 zoom, I loaned my son the 24 and he is a convert, he was using the 18-135 as that came with his camera.

The Canon 60 macro is also very SHARP - but a little more $$ ....

The 18-135 mm on my Canon 70D is my absolute favourite lens. I would go for the 50mm if you like to do portraits or the 24mm if you like to do landscapes. If you like to do both, I'd look for a zoom lens somewhere in the 20-50mm range.

Thank you all for your advice on purchasing a tripod. I selected one on advice given an could not be happier.

I currently have an 18-135 mm on my Canon 80D and am thinking of adding another lens. I am thinking of 24 mm or 50 mm. The price is around $125, which seems to be a good value.

I eventually would like a 70-200 but not within my budget now.

I always appreciate advice and feedback.

Thanks,
Jim

I love my 50mm f1.8 lens for my walkaround - nice to get a decent lens at a decent price. I added a 55-250mm this year to give me more reach, another decent one at relatively low price. I wanted a 70-300 but decided that the price was too much for my budget and expertise. The 50mm is what I use most of the time, and it and the 55-250 give me sharp pictures. I have a Canon Rebel t2i, an APSC.

Junglejim1949, I too fell for the 50mm propaganda. I now have two of Canon's cheaper 50's and couldn't be more disappointed. They're not clear or sharp. Small and light, yes. But, mostly worthless for real quality pictures. I have tried them on a T3i and 80D. Currently I am using a Sigma 10-20 lens and 17-50 with outstanding results.
If you want them to play with they are yours. Contact me via pm.

After reading reviews and gathering opinions on the 50 mm, f/1.8, STM, I was hit by the sense of "why
I bought it ?"...
So, i have been (at random times) doing exercises of futility using the fifty.
The attached photo was taken from a terrible position (one armpit over our front wall) @f/7.1, manual
focus and hand held. I think it is pretty sharp (where it was important to be), IMHO.

After I'm done... :)

"Canon EF 28-105mm F/3.5-4.5 II AF USM Lens Made In Japan" -- this lens I would recommend to you --- cost is $98.16 (free shipping) All-purpose lens--I had to work a lot to find you this one! Look in EBay. You will not regret having bought this discontinued lens! The 50mm lens is a must, too! (~$100).
P.S. Search in EBay with the EXACT quotation given in parenteses to find this lens -if it hasn't been bought - and use Paypal to pay for it. It shouldn't take more than two weeks to arrive.

Point to ponder. On a 35mm camera, a "normal" lens is 50mm. This is supposed to give photos with a view similar to what the human eye sees. On an APS-C Canon body the closest prime is the 35mm which has the 35 equiv field of view of a 56mm.

Actually the closest to 50mm on an APS-C Canon body is the fabulous Sigma 30mm f1.4.
The equivalent is 48mm. Iv'e got almost the same angle of view as the 50mm f1.8 on my old Canon AE-1.

The 30mm Sigma is pure magic on my EOS 77d.

No point in buying a lens unless you have a use for it. You have the good all purpose lens now.
I went with a wide angle zoom (10-22mm range) to expand my optical range. The short focal length made it useful in dim light too.
I have bought four more lens since then, and never found a need for a 50mm on an APS-C sensor. Go wide now, and long when you can afford it.

I have nikon 50mm 1.4f, it works well in most situations. I also use Nikon 24mm 2.8f. But I shoot nature. What do you shoot?

Here are a couple of snaps I just took. Both taken on tripod at the same distance (appox 2ft). The 50 might be a tad sharper but the 40 is wider. Camera is a 7D. No PP on either image. By the way, the subject lens is a 50mm 1.4 and my copy of this lens is not as sharp as the 1.8 is when both shot at same aperture.

About the image I posted (same pg.)
Just a note: IIRC, the only post-processing was a crop because
part of the wall showed at the far left of the photo. No sharpening
of any kind.

I highly recommend you have a 50mm in your bag. I use mine 75% of the time.

Would this be a good walk around lens on trip to England?

I will never have another bag without a good 70/80-200 f2.8. I would recommend holding off for the short term in favor if a much nicer more universal lens in the long run. (Can you not shoot at 50mm with your current lens?) rhetorical...
