Junglejim1949, I too fell for the 50mm propaganda. I now have two of Canon's cheaper 50's and couldn't be more disappointed. They're not clear or sharp. Small and light, yes. But, mostly worthless for real quality pictures. I have tried them on a T3i and 80D. Currently I am using a Sigma 10-20 lens and 17-50 with outstanding results.
If you want them to play with they are yours. Contact me via pm.

Thank you all for your advice on purchasing a tripod. I selected one on advice given an could not be happier.

I currently have an 18-135 mm on my Canon 80D and am thinking of adding another lens. I am thinking of 24 mm or 50 mm. The price is around $125, which seems to be a good value.

I eventually would like a 70-200 but not within my budget now.

I always appreciate advice and feedback.

Thanks,
Jim

I have and use a 24mm and a 40mm with my T4i both get more use than my 50mm, very nice lens when shooting a group or a party, or as a walk around lens, another suggestion that I like would be the 10-18, different uses but something to consider, Bob.

I have a mint Canon 24mm f2.8 and Canon 50mm f1.8 for sale.
Each was used less than 5 times. Both are in their original packaging.

Private message me for low price.

These were taken with a Nikon 50mm 1.8. I think they’re pretty sharp and clear.

Before choosing your first prime, I suggest you go through your photos and see which focal lengths you use the most. I would think 50mm would be a bit long for street photography on a crop frame but it depends on how you like your shots. The cheap primes produce IQ that is better than all but the very best zooms. Google the reviews. I would suggest you also consider the 40mm pancake. It's still under $200.

Yes, the Canon 24 f2.8 pancake is very sharp and compact - and inexpensive !

For about $250 you can get a used Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 - just sayin'....

I use the Canon 80D.
I use the pancake 24mm f2.8 bought used for 75. This lens is very sharp and has close focusing. Like about 6".
I also use the pancake 40mm f2.8. Bought used for 100.
Both just make handling the 80D a dream. Plus they both have the same filter size, 52mm.
What I did was to purchase a filter adapter, so I can use my B&W polarizer from my 70-300 Tamron on either pancake.
Finally, either pancake makes it easy to carry and quickly switch from the zoom.

I would suggest you view comparison videos on you tube.

Jim,
Go to my photos on Flickr, " John B" or John Barnum
I recently posted a wide angle long photo of a stadium soccer game. I used the 24mm pancake. You can zoom in to the scoreboard and read the printed texted. I am thinking the scoreboard was at least 225 feet away.
This will provide you a example.
If interested, you scroll through to see other photos taken with the 24mm pancake.

Both of those lenses that you are considering are in the same zoom range your current lens has. I would think this is enough unless you have a specific reason for needing those focal lengths. If I were you I would try to buy a lens that is not inside the zoom range of your current lens. Since you can't afford a larger zoom right now, perhaps you could think in terms of a wide angle lens like the 10-22mm or 10-18mm wide angle zooms. Or if you do need or want more focal length, there are some entry level zooms that go as high as 300mm.

Point to ponder. On a 35mm camera, a "normal" lens is 50mm. This is supposed to give photos with a view similar to what the human eye sees. On an APS-C Canon body the closest prime is the 35mm which has the 35 equiv field of view of a 56mm.
