Where do you store your stuff when not in use?

I have a full-on portable studio with back drops, lights, tripods, etc. To store it all, I converted the dead space under the stairs to a storage locker. I can stand up about half way and it has shelves. In the lower part I park rolling cases and bags.

The space under my stairs is a cleaning closet. If I gave up cleaning, I could store my gear there instead!

GrandmaG, That would have been a great idea, to take photos as we constructed the project, never thought about it at the time, but do need to get it done for insurance. Will pass on some links for possible similar ideas, a couple of the examples are essentially the same type of cart/box on wheels we have now. The GoPlus is one;

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F7VM9W2/ref=sspa_dk_detail_4?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B07F7VM9W2&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=21517efd-b385-405b-a405-9a37af61b5b4&pd_rd_wg=Evfsm&pf_rd_r=AJTXTQ79AQHTWCEFEJ5C&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&pd_rd_w=0uMJB&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pd_rd_r=cc9a1c96-dfb0-11e8-adc8-9775f9affe9d

DeWalt has so very many to choose from;
https://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-DWST08204-Tough-System-Extra/dp/B005HNJR0E/ref=pd_sbs_469_6?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B005HNJR0E&pd_rd_r=cc9a1c96-dfb0-11e8-adc8-9775f9affe9d&pd_rd_w=kutao&pd_rd_wg=Evfsm&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=7d5d9c3c-5e01-44ac-97fd-261afd40b865&pf_rd_r=AJTXTQ79AQHTWCEFEJ5C&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=AJTXTQ79AQHTWCEFEJ5C

The Stalwart stackable is economical but may be a bit narrow,

and,
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N1H4N5X/ref=twister_B07F6WR6CC?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1#productDetails
and the wheels are big enough to handle the loads.

Last, here's an idea like what we found to carry a couple bodies and lens on de plane, never check your camera/lens, they tend to disappear;

Saw one like this at target for about $59, they all should have TSA locks, but that doesn't equal protection from baggage folks. Black Polycarbonite is nice, or you can save a bundle and get some really tough ABS. Beware of brittle-plastic shell items that look nice but can shatter if they fall over. The rim should be sealed and it's helps if the inside is what you want, and the handle/wheels will hold up. $100 seems a lot compared to $59, depends on your taste. A weather proof canvas or leather sling-bag is what I used in the mountains/hills, with a holder or harness rig, long ago when I could pack all of that.

Few of these were really long links, but as always, Amazon has zillions to choose from. Names like Keter, Chicago tools as well as DeWalt can get very expensive for stackable storage, there are so many modular cases. At times the local prices wind up being much lower locally, so can save you money. The GoPlus stack (above) is similar bit smaller than the DeWalt I found. Glad others showed their DeWalt rigs. You can trick them out as much as you want. I'd thought about putting a Nikon sticker over DeWalt, but as others mention, not many folks would mess with a big toolbox, unless they love tools. Some years ago I started with a generic, black plastic trunk, strapped to an upright 2-wheeled cart; that old rig cost total only about $30. One of those huge Coleman-style coolers offer a lot of protection; saw one fall of a truck once, cracked on corner and shook up the unpadded beverages inside, but everything survived.

Encouraged Wife that instead of a heavy purse, she might want to try a leather, camera shoulder-sling bag. Many of those have more compartments than her purse. When she asks me to hold it, it weighs as much as my loaded camera bag and has only three dividers.

I used to be proud of the gear I used to pack around when I was in the business, (still am), and never thought much of pulling out a folder with photos showing locations and people I'd shot, including my lovely lens/bodies used. At a family reunion one relative over in the corner was bent about something, and began whining that too many people were overly prideful/narcissistic/selfish/capitalist, jerks, etc :)P (so...) Rather than engage in useless, snarky debate, I pulled out the Nikon with a 300mm and asked if she'd mind taking a group photo of the folks, as I usually got asked to do the honors. She turned multiple shades of purple, huffed/puffed, turned up her nose and whipped a cell phone out of her cavernous, diaper-style bag. She didn't get the joke, but everyone else got a kick out of it. Everyone should do what they like and do it well. Never worry about those who constantly find fault or put you down because they don't get your point of view. Happy shooting all. sv

All of my gear except a Nikon 200-500mm lens and my tripod are kept in two Lowepro camera bags and a Pelican hard case. The Nikon Lens is kept in a separate bag as is the tripod. I keep everything on a trunk in our guest bedroom. When we have an overnight guest which is quite seldom, everything gets moved into my library/ office. It's worked well for me for years. The big advantage is that I know exactly where everything is.

I use Pelican cases. One for my Sony, One for my Canon, and one for my Lumix. Which I store when not in use (seldom) in a pair of reconditioned old metal cabinets. None is large enough. I doubt they would be, even if they had an interior like the blimp hangers at Moffett Field. I keep my largest lens (Sigma 150-600) in the soft case provided by the manufacturer. Stuff I seldom use, (filters, monopod, old flash units) is stored in one of those plastic totes on a shelf in the back room.

Really? I do not believe you sold your kids. I think you traded them in on a camera upgrade! Did you get much?

Never let facts get in the way of good story! :) They aged out of the house to start their own lives but did grab the bedroom quickly to make my photo den. At the time I did spring for the 5DIII which was $3,500 for just the body. I still use it and very satisfied with it's results. All L lens with 100-400 II with a 1.4 extender last year for birds and overall distance work. Havn't sprung for a pure macro but do have extension tubes. Tubes and photo stacking handles those few macro urges.

Waiting to see how Canon edges into Mirrorless past it's initial entry.

I do have a drawer dresser for my photo gear.

My current stuff is in my camera bag, with some flashes and a meter and some older lenses and gadgets on a shelf. CAUTION::: Keep the bag zipped at all times. Someone--certainly not YOU--but you sound like you have lotsa help--will inevitably lift the bag to move it and if it is not zipped all the contents will spill onto the hardest surface available, landing on the most fragile and vulnerable place it has. Guarnateeeeeed!

Keep the kids, they're a constant source of amusement--if not immediately, the stories get better with time--especially when they're old enough to fill in the blanks. Ya know, the ones that PRoVE they're really taking after you.

Keep it cool, dry and secure. And use it often.

My current stuff is kept in a closet in 2 bags and 3 drawers. Since both kids are now on their own we have 2 spare bedrooms. Winter projects: play room for grandchildren in one and hobby/photograghy room in the other. Can’t wait to get started after the holidays. Thanks to all for the great ideas.
