Where do you store your stuff when not in use?

I am accumulating camera equipment and right now it's scattered around. We have a large house, but a lot of people living here. What I really need is a kid to move out so I can have their room! But...since making a 14 year old go live somewhere else is most likely illegal, I need to find a way to store my stuff in another room. I have looked at cases (like Pelican), dressers, cabinets, etc. I don't know which is the best way as far as not damaging the equipment over time. It's not going anywhere with me. I have smaller camera bags for travel. I just need somewhere to stash it all in one place around the house.

I'm interested in what other people do with all their gear that they aren't using in a grab and go bag. I've been looking online and see differing opinions on the cases due to no air circulation, etc. And people cautioning the use of some foam padding as it breaks down. Not sure how much of that stuff makes a difference. So I'd like to know what the Hedgehogs do! (aside from making family members move out :)

Thanks for any ideas you may have.

My wife sacrificed a shelved hall closet. My camera stuff shares the space with seven years of tax returns.

In the attic. On shelves I made in the maid's quarters.

That's a problem. I put up one of those white wire shelves in the bedroom, and I have it full of plastic storage boxes, with labels. "Straps," "Tripod Parts," "Filters," etc. The shelf is now piled three high, and I'm looking for more space. I have a similar storage problem with my fifty ukuleles. I guess you could say I'm an accumulator.

Some foam is worse than others. I've never had foam that broke down.

I have a downstairs bathroom with an odd, oversize layout. Behind the door is enough space to put a vintage dresser. It is full of camera gear, bags are stacked along side, tripods on the right side.
It works.

Amazon search: Camera cabinet dehumidifier. You would have peace of mind that your stuff is being stored in a low humidity environment.

How much stuff? shelf in a book case, drawer in a file cabinet, could go all the way up to a whole closet if you have enough, I've been downsizing for several years so had a small room filled at one time, down to a large fishing tackle bag and some overflow, Bob.
BTW keep a ready bag of camera gear just in case!

I keep most of my rarely used equipment (flashes, remotes, lenses, and filters) in different camera bags/backpacks ready to go, hanging on coat hooks near the door to the garage. The Pelican case sits empty for the most part as I find it a bit much to lug for a hike/etc. The Pelican case is better suited for flights overseas, at least to me. Light stands and umbrellas are stored on a high shelf in my closet if and when I ever need to use them. The Gitzo tripod and monopod lies on an ottoman or hallway bench ready to go as well. The things we do for our hobby, right?

Now I use my phone for all my daily hikes and backyard flowers but it doesn't have the reach for the great blue heron I've seen the last two outings as it is on some stones or log jams in the river. GRRR! Nothing is perfect...

I know you are not at this point but when the time comes you will appreciated hearing this:
I had a bedroom full of equipment; however, the necessity of moving into a retirement facility caused a catastrophic downsizing of my hobby. Really should have gotten rid of that big hulking enlarger 20 years ago when going digital.
It has taken five years to finally decide on and retain the bare essentials needed to enjoy my hobby.
I built a slide out tray into the large built-in wall unit surrounding the flat screen TV where books and some small remembrances of a long full life are on display. The tray holds three lenses and a camera body (the macro lens is in my sock drawer). The tripod with gimbal head is in the back corner of a clothes closet and the large wall length desk full of computer equipment is now reduced to this 13" MacBook Pro stored in the little side table next to my recliner.
You know what? It all works very well for me!

Just showed your post to my wife and she said I'm still not allowed to bring more than the one banjo and one guitar into the apartment. (She has just one ukulele.)

Regardless of where it is stored, I highly recommend a detailed inventory. Further, take the time to tag/label all but the most obvious items.
I am in the process of doing so and it has been quite revealing and no fun at all.

Time to thin the herd!

In two camera bags on the floor of a closet (back pack and side pack).
(My dividers have cloth on them to keep the foam guts contained.)
Hardly used lenses are in cases on a shelf.
Other miscellaneous pieces (chargers, and stuff not always taken on an outing) are in one of the drawers in a nightstand.
