New Rule of Thirds

I am reminiscing from my time in New York in the late 60's. I belonged to a camera club for a little while - we showed slides then- and always the Americans asked me what filters I'd used to get the blue skies and green grass. Goddamit - this is New Zealand where the ski IS bright blue (except when we have an ash cloud pass by from the Tongariro eruption last night) and the grass IS green (except when covered in ashfall as happened close to the central north Island volcano last night)! Love your chat, you lot!

Rules are meant to broken - 2/3's photo equipment - 1/3 alcohol

Get involved in the political squabbling under General Chit Chat and it will become 2/3 on alcohol and 1/3 on equipment! :P :P

But you just said that "Rules are meant to broken." Now there are exceptions?

Just don't fly over my house :)

Love this rule but it never works! Mortage, gas, electric and water always want their portion. I need the roof over my head to protect the computer and electric to keep it running.

Abby, I like the background, is it simply overhead light diffuser plastic. I love broken glass as a subject ... at times looks surreal. For subject lighting I often use a USB powered small goose neck light (for laptops) system powered by a plugin-N2wall USB power source weighted down with plastic container filled with grout. This allows multi lights to be plugged in and gives versitility of effects.

I like the rule of 36, a new way of looking at composition. Also the use of empty space as a photo component as Abby has with the blue wine glass photo above.

I like to think of the "rules of thirds" like the Pirate's Code in Pirates of the Carribbean. It is merely a suggestion!

Good to finally see an intellectual discussion of the Rule of Thirds.

Thanks for the kind words.

Those wine glass shots are easier to shoot than most people think - kind of messy though!

Wish it was blue wine instead of blue food coloring.

Thanks for the kind words.

I only had to shoot @ 50 pictures to finally get one that looked decent. Glad I don't shoot film anymore!

I shot what I think looks good, if it happens not be on rule of thirds then so be it. Sometimes shots look better differently.

It looks more like a board game than rule of thirds.
