Looks like a great lens. Too bad Nikon and cannon can’t make a lens this good.

Could you please tell us what you base your statement on and its a Canon. Are you talking the zoom lens over a prime, IQ, cost, weather sealing or what? BTW, great first 6 hours and a great shots too!

Thank you all for you comments and thoughts. I certainly did consider the Nikon 200x500, f/5.6 but wanted the extra reach. I agree that the VC and AF buttons are in a place on the left side of the lens where they can accidentally be moved, and this has already happened to me. However, it's no different than my Sigma in that regard and is something I need to be vigilant about. I think the Tamron's buttons are recessed just a hair more than the Sigma's, but they can still be accidentally moved by brushing against my leg when walking.

Being a grass is always greener kind of guy, I just purchased said lens to replace my Sigma 150x600MM Contemporary lens which I've had for over two years. While I had reasonably good luck with the Sigma, I felt it was often slow to acquire focus. I bought the Tamron after reading many reviews as well as comments on this web site. These shots were all taken in the afternoon on two separate sunny October days in Seattle. They were taken at the Union Bay Natural area which borders Lake Washington to the east and the University of Washington campus to the west. I had good luck finding birds. The Green Heron is the first I have seen anywhere in three years. I coupled the Tamron with a Nikon D500. Regarding the lens, my first impression is pretty positive. My center focus point was not even close to being on the flying Green Heron (the heron was in the upper left corner of the frame) but I still got a reasonably good shot of a bird that was moving really fast. Let me know what you think and, if you already own this lens, what your experience with it has been.

Beautiful Pictures. Really like the green heron! I think your last picture is a Tri-Color Heron. The Blue Heron has a blue or sometimes a reddish neck and all it's wing feathers are blue. I had to go to Florida to see a real blue heron as we only have tri colors here.

Thank you Floyd. Unfortunately, there are no tricolored herons in Washington State, although I wish there were. There are, however, many thousands of great blue herons. So many, in fact, I often don't bother to photograph them any more. But in this case I was testing out my new lens.

It looks like you're well on your way to loving this lens. I'm not able to hand hold and get good shots, so I envy your success.

I've used that lens for several years and love it. I've found the following settings
work best for BIF's, AF-C, lock center focus, AE button for center focus, set joy stick
to group focus. If subject is not moving use AE button, if flying use group with joy stick.
I get a higher keeper rate with these settings.

Does anyone shoot birds using the on-board flash ?

The on camera flashes do not have range for these type of shots plus the long lens would cause shadows closer up. Now I have heard of using remote flashes with a lure/setup stage but I would think any flashes would frighten the birds? Led lighting might be better? I've never tried that at least not yet...relying on available daylight only.
