Are photographers irrelevant to photography?

Science and photography are similar in one respect (aside from the fact that science made photography possible), they can be roughly divided into two groups. In science there are theorist and researchers who contribute new ideas and discoveries, and then there are those who, called educators (that was me), translate those ideas and new facts so that others can understand the process of science and become contributors to the field. Photography has the manufacturers and practitioners who constantly develop new hardware and artistic technique to produce impactful images. And then there are those who have the ability to teach others how to use the hardware and develop their own art to produce exciting new images. Neither field would survive without both. So, I nominate Scott Kelby as my photographer mentor and major influence. If you truly want to understand the science and art of your photography try teaching it to another person. To wit, if you can't clearly explain to someone else what your doing, then you clearly don't understand it yourself. Doesn't mean you can't produce quality images, it just means you don't know why.

Why are there there so few posts on UHH about well-known photographers (living or dead)?

This thread is a place to post about the photographers you admire (present company excepted)
and their work.

Or, if you believe photography is a technology (rather than an art, craft or tradition), then it's a place to
post about your favorite engineer or programmer.

Please, no posts about your favorite corporation, brand or product--we get enough of that.
Why are there there so few posts on UHH about well... (show quote)

LoL, you want a post about dead photographers?? Hey, why don’t you lead a seance, THAT could be cool! We could actually ask Weegee is he really said, “f8 and don’t be late”!!!! LoL
My wuestion is alway, “why do we never talk about photography”???

Beautiful things created years ago are still beautiful now, so if you don’t want to enjoy beauty so be it.

Here's one I did, back on February 17th -

Of the Contemporary Artists shooting Today, which ones have inspired you, and why?

https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-514286-1.html

And here's one I did, back on November 15th, 2017 -

Who are the Photographers from the Past (or the present) whose work you've most liked, and why?

https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-496960-1.html

There may be one or two others, I did, even earlier than this ...

Please feel welcome to browse my list of topics (in signature) and go to any which may interest you ...

Perhaps it is because nowadays to be exeptional is not PC. One is encouraged to be part of a herd, and not stand out as an original thinker or superior performer. "We are all the same" mentality is of course not only naive, its boring. Herald our heros!

Read my tag line, I enjoy the old masters as much as the next guy. I shoot beauty every time I shoot!
But I’ll stay away from my heroes, too many here would not understand or consider, for example the contributions of Mapplethorpe as a master!

I always believed that UHH is a place to discuss technology and technique as well as to gain knowledge of excellent photo op locations through personal experiences. Examples of others' work shown here expands our horizons and gives us food for thought. Criticism expressed here opens eyes to other point of view and is usually positive in intent. Negativism usually get stomped or starts a lengthy waste of bandwidth for no gain.

I'm a big fan, but his subjects probably have limited appeal to people here, if they have even heard of him. He's also a photographer whose prints you must see in person to get the full effect.

Yes, I'd agree with both points. Limited fan numbers and personally seeing his prints.

Sally Mann. Her newest work is incredible. The complete opposite of the digital photographer. Loves noise.
