Why are there there so few posts on UHH about well-known photographers (living or dead)?
This thread is a place to post about the photographers you admire (present company excepted)
and their work.
Or, if you believe photography is a technology (rather than an art, craft or tradition), then it's a place to
post about your favorite engineer or programmer.
Please, no posts about your favorite corporation, brand or product--we get enough of that.

Some of the artists and styles I admire:

I believe "your intention" defines what you get. Do you document or does you picture represent a PICTURE not a PHOTOGRAPH. Do you hand it on the wall ton remember something or for art.
Yousuf Karsh has always been my idol when it comes to portraits. One of his most notable is of Winston Churchill, but others are equally wonderful.
Amen, Linda.
In addition to his photos, you had to admire him for carrying all that equipment to all those impossible places.

Then you would be impressed by Carleton Watkins, who traveled around the old West with a mule train carrying a 18x22 glass plate view camera and portable darkroom because those glass plates had to be developed immediately after shooting them.

I agree, Karsh and Dorothea Lange are a close tie in my book.

Art Wolfe is my favorite
He's one of mine also. I've really learned a lot from him over the years. And I like his manner of approaching a subject or a place in order to record it properly.
I have long admired and been influenced by Art Wolfe, George Lepp and Dewitt Jones. Years ago those three participated in a critique program in which one could send in an image and all three would critique it. It was interesting how they differed in their critique. There's a young man named Doug Gardner who has a show on PBS called Wild Photo Adventures. I really liked his show because not only does he show you the places and animals he's shooting, but gives you his how-to as he does it. I'm not sure I'd call him an icon, but he certainly is helpful.
Ernst Haas with his "Motion in Still Photographs" was one of my early photographer mentors. Using Kodachrome 25 and showing down his shutter speed he showed how effective movement in photographs can be.

For me it is
John Paul Caponigro. He is thoughtful, experimental, and an excellent educator.
We had a thread on Gene Smith here a few months ago. He remains my favorite.
No one has mentioned Joel-Peter Witkin.

Sorry but you don't get to dictate.
I subscribe to MutualArt.com which often sends emails alerts about gallery openings and auctions about any artists and photographers you are interested in; like Adams, Weston, Avedon, Bernhardt, etc., etc.,etc.
