As a user of the Linux OS for 20 years, I have always used Gimp and still do. It does everything I need it to do. I use Raw Therapee to convert my raw images and then take the jpg into Gimp for any final tweaks if needed.

I downloaded Gimp to try the program it seems like a big learning curve , my LR 4 seems a lot easier,my question is it worth it and anybody out there using It? I looked it up on u tube to try to understand it, I just wanted to try a new program and it is free. Thanks Jim Bianco

It's lot faster with all the same power and more, to get the LR/PS package. You already know LR so you can come up to speed quickly and keep keyword, the powerful search, etc. You then slowly learn the PS functions if you need to do more advanced editing and there is direct to PS from LR interface. LR has come a long way since Rel 4!!

Have you tried FastStone? It is free, and has many good features, including video editing.

I have used both PhotoShop and Gimp, and while PS is more user friendly, there isn't much that it can do that GIMP can't. An excellent book to get you over the learning curb (GIMP help does suck) is "GIMP 2.8 for Photographers" by Klaus Goelker. I have found it to be very helpful.

Jim, Gimp takes a while to get comfortable with, but it never seemed that difficult to learn. If you put the time into learning the layout, once you get the hang of it, you can do anything you want, without charge. We use the other packages, pay and opensource; each program has good points and weak spots; some layouts look very similar but the menus are backwards. Like anything worthwhile, if you stick with it, look at the numerous help videos, it's top notch. IMO, it's worth devoting some time into, before casting it aside as too much of a learning curve; some say that about PS you know. Good Luck. sv

I've used Gimpshopsince "the turn of the century" (I like saying that). I can still fit it on a camera memory card, and install it "in the field" w/o worrying about licensing.

BTW, "GIMP" stands for "GNU Image Manipulation Program", and GNU stands for "GNU is Not Unix".
Them Linus folk lerved their recursives back in the day.

After an attempt to use GIMP, I found the learning curve was as others have said, Steep. The goal is to shoot edit as quickly, GIMP did not fit for me.
