I downloaded Gimp to try the program it seems like a big learning curve , my LR 4 seems a lot easier,my question is it worth it and anybody out there using It? I looked it up on u tube to try to understand it, I just wanted to try a new program and it is free. Thanks Jim Bianco

I used GIMP before I purchased Photoshop. It is a learning curve. But then, so is PS. I could do everything in GIMP that I could do in PS (but that was some years ago). It's definitely worth learning.

No - I hated it. I had to try and use it on a different computer (not my own) once and couldn't stand it. If your going to learn a new, cheaper, program then spend your time learning Affinity Photo for about $60. Affinity is more like Photoshop with some neat things that PS doesn't have. I have Affinity but my go to has been and always will be LR Classic & PS CC.

Did you see this page: https://www.gimp.org/tutorials/

Most people on UHH have described Gimp as having a big learning curve. PS Elements has a free trial if you want check into pay-for software. It has quick, guided and expert modes, and lots of support in the form of tutorials, videos, books and classes. One benefit over LR is the ability to create layers and layer masks. There are several of us here who highly recommend

I started using GIMP instead of PS a long time ago. GIMP is a pixel editor (like PS) where LR is a parametric editor. GIMP taught me how to use layers and masks but eventually I switched to PS because it had more capability. The UI is different from PS so there's another learning curve when you switch to PS.

As I said, I switched a long time ago so I expect that GIMP has evolved during that time, but then so has PS.

Concerning learning curve, just invest an evening or two to get to know GIMP, it's not that bad. One of the strengths of GIMP is that it is highly configurable; you can make it adapt to your exact workflow. With a search on the internet, you can also find instructions on how to set it up to look and act just like Photoshop, if that's what you wish.

GIMP has a manual, some Youtube tutorials, and, as Linda From Maine has noted, some written tutorials. That said, I'd estimate that Photoshop has at least a hundred times more learning material on line, not to mention dozens of books, as well as college classes. There are far more people around who know PS and might be able to help you when you're stuck.

Jim, here's a GIMP topic from last month in UHH you could also take a look at:
https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-554469-1.html

I had to chuckle over rmalarz's description on page 1: it has one of the most convoluted menu systems I've ever seen built into a program of any sort

But now that I've skimmed through it, beyond page 1 the thread appears to be just bickering and nonsense, so probably not worth your effort to click on it after all.

Gimp has been given a facelift!!!!!it now looks like PS Elements - fewer toolboxes and more pull down menus.

If you haven't looked at it for a while I recommend that you do so.

Gimp 2.10 for linux and I think its called Gimpphoto for windows

Add Darktable and you need not subscribe at all

have fun

I have used GIMP for some time. I like it for many functions but I now use ON1 Photo Raw for most editing and find it quite user friendly and feature rich.

I’ve used GIMP for about 15 years and am very happy with it. I don’t like paying for software if there is a free equivalent that is satisfactory. I’m not a professional and prefer to spend my money on lenses etc. I did have photo shop all those years ago, prior to using GIMP, but when it wouldn’t work with a new operating system I switched to GIMP. I’ve never felt any need to switch back. Personally, I look at hobbies as a wAy to keep learning new things, and there are still things for me to learn with GIMP

I use GIMP as well as Photoshop CC 2019, ON1, Luminar, Topaz Studio, Affinity and a few more. GIMP is now at version 2.10.2 and resembles Photoshop and is just as easy to work with as Photoshop (uDemy has a good online learning course for GIMP for around $20). If you end up learning and using GIMP (which is free) you might want to download Darktable (also free) which GIMP uses as the raw processor (like Adobe ACR). At first you might find GIMP confusing (and there are videos on uTube showing how to work with it), but if you ever decided to upgrade to Photoshop CC you will find a lot is the same and the learning curve will be easier.

youtube is loaded w/ gimp tutorials. some videos are quite good & some are awful; you will learn to judge the good from the bad. watch one or two, bookmark them, so you can refer to them in the future. most of the time, i work on a photo & watch the youbube video @ the same time....works for me. remember: gimp is free...photoshop, while quite good, charges a monthly fee on top of what you pay for the software.
