Roberts Camera in Indianapolis has used equipment. They have a great website with new and used equipment. I have done lots of business with them and have never been disappointment. We are very fortunate to have them located here. Check them out.

Looking at getting an old camera - Nikon D200 or 300.

I have never bought anything on Ebay.

Most gear seems unrated. Some sellers allow return, some not. Descriptions are often internally inconsistent.

Seems to me that buying used via B&H, Adorma or KEH (possibly others - if so whom?) would be best way to do this so as to have some idea of what one is getting with the potential for return.

Looks like this route costs a bit more, but seems worth it to me.

Comments, thoughts, opinions

Thanks

I have nothing but good things to say about MPB and Robert's Camera for used equipment in addition to those already cited by other UHH members.

I have bought gear from Ebay for years. I have never had a issue. In fact in most cases i was more than pleased with the camera or whatever camera gear i bought from them. Just make sure to check the seller's feedback and don't buy anything from someone that has negative feedback. Even if they don't mention returns, you are still protected by Ebays money back policy. I have noticed that KEH also sells on Ebay but they don't give very good descriptions of what they are selling. So i have never bought from them on Ebay . Also make sure to use PayPal so you are protected. I have bought several items from MPB.com and have been extremely happy with my purchase and their service.

some of these older members are the ones to whom you should listen; they've been around quite a while & have seen quite a bit & have had many experiences. personally, i trade w/ adorama; b&h is another excellent site/store; i've never had a bit of trouble w/ these two. I don't know anything about keh. stay away from e-bay, craigslist (this is my personal opinion) so....for what it's worth...

Personally I have made some great purchases on Craig's List, with some precautions. The beauty of CL is you meet face to face and can inspect the gear 1st hand and test the item for functionality. I have bought 2 Canon bodies, 3 'L' lenses and sold 2 bodies and 4 EF-S lenses with good results. That said I ALWAYS meet the buyer/seller in the lobby of my bank, (they have branches all over the state) and whether selling or purchasing, the funds are withdrawn or deposited immediately. If the buyer/seller is reluctant to these stipulations I pass. I'm not going to a Starbucks parking lot with a pocket full of cash.

For USA sales I prefer KEH.
For Ebay I prefer the sales from Japanese sellers. Seem to have better quality products or are honest about grading and calling out flaws etc. I also always select the returns allowed filter. But have gotten some great products on Ebay but again most all from Japanese sellers.

I too have have had good luck with Japanese sellers, through eBay. Not to say it couldn’t happen, but I have never been stiffed, so far.

I never bought new. Everything is refurbished or used. I use Craigslist a lot and never had a problem. These suggestions above are all good.
I have used all and been satisfied. Just shop around a lot and get exactly what you want and need.....

Same here. They are a very good outfit to deal with. They do offer a limited warranty on their equipment.

I’ve purchased from mpb. Good service, reliable and better price than the others.

I've bought and sold lenses with mpb and agree. They've been professional and pleasant to work with. That experience includes a lens that didn't meet my expectations - they simply asked why, immediately provided a free return shipping label and transferred full refund upon receipt.

Ebay is the best way to save $$ and lose the middle man. Buy from someone only with 100% feedback, read the description and if it comes to you and it is not to that description they have to return your $ and pay your shipping both ways even if they don't take returns. Ebay is best if you follow this formula!

Absolutely agree. Shop smartly on Ebay and you won't get burned.

All you say is true for a BUYER. eBay is not so good for the seller as their fees rob you blind and seem to keep going up. On a $500 camera you will lose about $75 between eBay and PayPal fees.

I agree with hj, ebay rips off the seller with their fees and paypal does the same. I closed my paypal and ebay accounts several years ago and still I get emails from paypal. My numerous requests to paypal to cease and desist with the messages did nothing so now any email from ebay or paypal goes into the junk or phishing folders and are deleted, automatically.

Great CL advice, that's the only way to go, at the bank, under cameras and deposit the cash!!
