I graduated from college ii 1971. The major I was in had a calculus requirement, which caused me more sweats than I like to think about. Fortunately, the calculus requirement was dropped the semester before I was due to take it.
To this day I am thankful.

After all of my learning of math in college, I've never used any of it since - what a waste.

As a requirement I had to take Advanced Mathematics for Engineers. This had a prerequisite of 4 semesters of calculus. Since I had to spend that much time learning all of that, I made, and still make, a point of using that mathematics background. I did use it quite a bit during my engineering career and now, find ways to apply it to other work and fun projects. It even has applications in photography, if one looks for them.

Back in the 80's Portland State (OR) began offering a PhD in "Systems Science" primarily aimed at those of us who were management consultants. I was very interested in the program until I learned there was a language requirement. After being told a computer language would not fulfil the requirement I was informed the dept. of languages threatened to veto the whole program if they couldn't have their demand for this criteria included. That killed it for me when considering the enormous amount of time required to learn a subject that would be useless in my line of business.

Very true, after 40 years as a chemist I too have never used my calculus. However, I will say I learned more practical calculus in P-Chem then I ever did in any Math Class.

I think it says you can “understand” it, not learn it. There is a difference.

The great mathematician John von Neumann once said, "In mathematics you don't understand things, you just get used to them."

I got a kick out of this, which turned up in my YouTube feed.
Note the title, then the video length.
Frankly, it took me a lot longer than this to learn calculus.......

I saw that as well ...

With a pre-science major in high school I had to take several math classes. The teacher I had for most of then was Mr. Cvelbar. He was a good teacher. Took Algebra, Geometry and Trig, not Calculus. Never took an astronomy course, but when Shoemaker Levy 9 was in the sky, bought a telescope and with it came a membership in the Riverside Astronomical Society. Loved it until my sight became too bad to see very much detail.

I think sometimes we use that kind of knowledge in our daily lives without really knowing where it came from.

I turned 74 yesterday , lived quite a full life and still learning things every day. Learned my trade , how to take/make quite good photographs , build a few houses and things , grow (help to grow) many plants and , you know what? never ever needed algebra that I found very difficult to understand in school, never mind Calculus. My best friend was the first person to talk about it to me during my teenage years but there again he loved math.
