A falcon, I think. I say that only because I saw a falcon at a show last weekend. The falconer had a Lannier Falcon, native to southern Europe and North Africa, that looked something like this guy. Perhaps he is a Prairie Falcon.

Looks very close to the markings of a red shouldered hawk.

I agree that it is not a Red-tailed Hawk.

I say it's a Broad-winged Hawk. Compare attached image.

Broad-winged Hawk. It's not a Red-tailed, it's not a Coopers hawk

You can't rely on the internet when it comes to hawk identification. The bottom photo is a falcon, note the under eye markings and the long slender wings. The Cooper's has short broad wings.

My first thought was red-tailed hawk. This spring and summer we had a breeding pair return to our neighborhood. They've been coming for many years. I thought they might be Swainson's Hawks, which live in this area but never could confirm it. Here's a picture taken from about 400 feet away. It's a long shot with a 600mm lens on a tripod but the thing is I don't see the yellow on the beak like your example for what that's worth.

Maybe Swainson's Hawk

Excellent shot.
Where are you located? That might help to identify.

It might also be a Coopers hawk.
