What was your lighting? I find kivas hard to photograph. Yours' is very nicely done.

Natural light. Late morning under clear sky, a shaft of light streamed in through the ladder entrance and illuminated a square space on the kiva wall. That light reflected downward onto the floor, and (very dimly) reflected elsewhere in the --maybe 10' in diameter?-- interior. Exposure for the interior was simple enough (f/7.1 - 1/250 - ISO 800); the difficult part was exposing such that the sky and sunlight lit entryway weren't blown out. It was obvious while shooting that some extreme processing would be necessary, and if nothing else, the result should serve as a good example of why shooting RAW and having good data to work from can be especially useful when its needed.
The attached image is yet another view from a different angle. The patch of light on the wall, as well as the rock/wood that surround the hole of the ladder entrance were completely blown out and texture/featureless. Those areas were 'fixed' via compositing/clone brush work in pp.
Inside/outside shots can be tricky at times, and I figure its alright to be tricky right back at them. Shows 'em who's in charge.
I really like this second shot. It shows such lovely texture, and seeing the patch of light is nice. I'm never successful at these shots with such a wide difference in lighting. Sometimes I can draw the details back into the light, but not often. Kudos!
Great detail and colors, Jim!
Super nice shot, really stands out in quality.
