The Kancamangus Highway and surrounding areas will be at or just past peak when you visit nest week. You could travel the Kancamangus going east and return via US302 (or vice versa ). Its a great scenic loop. There a some very nice turnoffs on the Kancamangus that provide nice views without traveling far from the road. The Rocky Gorge, Lower falls and Albany bridge pulloffs all provide nice views of the Swift River with nicely colored foliage backdrops. It will be crowded (better to go on weekdays) and some pulloffs are pay parking. Depending on weather, another great route to travel is the Mount Washington Auto Road or the Cog railroad. Again these will be crowded. The auto road has some exceptional foliage views in the early section and (if you're lucky enough to get have a clear day) some pretty spectacular views on the way to the summit.

Look at the map. The western section of the Kanc is roughly north / south so its easier to shoot west / east. If you're a hiker the ridge between the summit of Lafayette and Lincoln (the eastern side of Franconia Notch) is spectacular but it is a VERY ambitious climb. Cannon Tram and Mt. W. Auto Road avoid that. Finally my favorite water falls / swimming hole in the Whites is in Bartlett. Take Bear Notch Road off the Kanc to Rte 302 and go straight through the light. At the T take a left and follow your nose for a mile or 2 and there it is. Park your car and hike about 100 yards east to the railroad bridge.

You can stay at either end of the Kanc, but I would recommend North Conway and that would be closer to Maine. There are loads of photo ops on that road and there are some side roads that go further north past Jackson NH. The whole area is in the middle of the White Mountain National Forest. You could take the COG railway to the top of MT Washington - 6,280' - tallest mountain on the east coast. North Conway is a quaint town with many photo ops there as well - starting with the Train Station downtown and the shops along main street - Rt. #16.

Any of the ski areas are good most you can ride the gondola or lift for reasonable price. Evans Notch, Rt. 113 on the Maine NH border is very pretty with photo ops along the way. Watch for moose !

Do you / are you planning any hiking? You’ll see all the tourist stuff by staying on the roads, but there is some really beautiful stuff “off the beaten path”...all the way from flat ex-RR grades to difficult strenuous hiking—-depending what you want.
Suggest stopping at the NH Tourism stand in Lincoln and asking their advice.
And, great food and grub at Woodstock Inn. Not to mention the townette of N Woodstock is quite photogenic.

The Kanc is beautiful, avoid the bus tours! Take your your time. Enjoy the other sites in the area. Hopefully you are able to hike a little as there are so many sites to explore n the area. The bus tours on the Hanc have robbed all the joys of earlier years. Arethusa Falls, Diana's Bath, Frankenstein, etc etc. Hope you hit the great season in the fall.

What they all said! I have several hundred photos from there over the past 20 years. None with a DSLR and the camera I did use I had very little understanding of how to use it. However, I did get some good ones so you will come away with some breathtaking photos. Do not forget the New Hampshire and Maine coastline. Lots of light houses and other great scenic shots. Good luck and have fun.
