You might want to check out the Tamron 18-400. While at Yellowstone it was my walk around lens, and I have a Sigma 150-600 which I never used, as the 18-400 captured everything I wanted.

Consider Nikon's 18-300, which came out, you could say, in conjunction with the D500. Good zoom (300), good wide angle (18). Very good walk-around.

I know you said DX only, but I have a D7200 and I bought a AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED to use with it. It's not that much weight compared to a DX version. It is extremely sharp and with the crop factor it is effectively a 105-450mm on my DX body. Mine was refurbished and Nikon has them refurbished for $400.00.

I’m starting to consider my next lens acquisition and looking for recommendations from the UHH hive mind.

DX mount only. I don’t want the added weight and expense of FX.

I’d like to have a max reach of at least 300 mm, longer is even better.

Prefer speed to zoom range. My Nikon 18-70 is my walk around and a tele zoom starting at about 100mm would be ideal.

I’m happy with Nikon, Sigma, and Tokina brands. Would also consider some Tamrons.

VR is a requirement.

Don’t need the latest and greatest models. I’m happy buying used.

Ideas, anyone? 1,2,3, Go!

How about the Nikon 70-300mm DX AF-P lens? Reviews on the B&H website are pretty good. What body are you mounting it to, as there are some restrictions? Also, Nikon has several 70-300 mm older models which may work with your body. I have the FX model that works equally as well on my D7200, as it does on my D750. I purchased it used, in excellent condition, at a good price. I use it for my grandson’s sports and it responds well.

Perhaps a Nikon 70-300 VR is what you need.

Andy; I'm confirming Gene's thoughts
"Andy, the only lens I can think of that answers most of your criteria - price, DX -only, speed and VR, and decent image quality would be the 70-300 AF-P DX"

This example was shot with the above mentioned which I pickup up new for $208 (white box i.e. gray market).
f/11; 1/1000; 300mm on a D7100

I wish you well on your journey Andy

The reach is a little longer, it feels lighter, autofocus is quick, image quality is very good, less bulky. IMO.

Although I now have a full frame, 70-200 2.8, I had extensive time and use with a 55-300dx on two different dx cameras - d5100 and d7100. What a gem of a lens with superb VR. I've used it with and without a tripod. I believe you can pick one used very reasonably. I also used it indoors at a wedding (believe it or not). It's very light also. I've taken close ups of bees, wildlife and jewelry and action shots of dogs running, soccer games......That said, here are a couple of images I took with this lens. Another thing I liked about the lens which you will rarely ever hear about third party lenses other than how sharp they are is the saturation of the 55-300 which I liked. I have also used a ff 70-300 vr on a d5300 and although the 70-300 seemed to focus faster and considered a better lens (more expensive too), for the money, 55-300 used is a great deal.

If Andy is still using the D3200, I thought I read that the AF-P lens won't work with the older models.

Check out the Sigma 18-300mm DC Macro Contemporary lens. Great lens for under 400 bucks.

Got a real bargain on a D7100 body, which is what I’m now using daily. My wife is still on the D3200, but she might as well have the Sigma 18-300 superglued to it, she’s so fond of that lens.
