Be sure to get the Apple one. A few friends of mine bought other brands and they didn’t work.

[quote=dukepresley]Bfree, I have a similar issue, except i shoot with a D700 using CF cards. I have not been able to find, on the Apple website, a device that accommodates CF cards. Fortunately, there is an Apple store near me, so I will check there. And there is a Best Buy in our city and Amazon is always handy. (Altho I did check Amazon, but was not successful -- there were some offerings, but none of them enjoyed stellar reviews.)
Appreciate your help!

Duke, Duke; My cameras now all use SD cards. I still have the CFreader, that served me well over the past years. However, I did find you a reader on Amazon that has good ratings 4.5 out of 5. Check it out

Yes...power required from a card reader can be a killer, but not sure how a powered hub would perform.

Power, yup that can be an issue. When I’m on the road in my truck or RV, I always have enough power cords readily available. (For phones and iPads) I really haven’t found that the use of a reader in the field sucks much power. Or nowhere as much as my WiFi or signal search. Also if the conditions are a bit dirty (wind dust or sand) I won’t risk opening the flap to get the card out, and just resort to using the lighting to USB wire. But that uses camera batteries. So no matter what I / we do power is an issue. I’ve recently ordered a solar power pac where I should be able keep everything charged, and take my laptops too.

When you plug in an adapter the iPad decides if there is enough power. If you don’t get a warning you should be good to go. The Apple adapter for USB is USB3 so it will need the Lightning power cable if you are using a USB3 card reader.

I got an adapter to take with me on a land tour and cruise where I was taking my iPad, but not my computer. It allowed me to download my photos every night as a backup so I didn't have to worry about not having any backups on the 17 days nor wifi. Worked great. Just did the basic editing, but was a comfort to know they were there.

I have an Android tablet, so I'm not sure about this. There are available thumb drives with both standard and mini USB connectors. I have two, 16 and 32 G SanDisk. So it is easy to load them from a standard computer USB and use the mini side to load the tablet. I get them at Walmart.

If that's all you want to do, the Apple dongle is excellent. It's seamless and fairly fast. If you want the option of writing to the SD card for any other purpose, other companies make Apple certified dongles. I have a Leef one, though it only supports micro sd cards. Works well though.

I also use the Apple SD to Lightning adapter. Very fast download and easy too. Once downloaded to the IPad it gets saved to iCloud. And you can have the images deleted from the card or not. The iPad will ask you. I keep the images on the card and always format in the camera.
