Sony rx100 II has a hot shoe but no viewfinder. 3 and 4 are excellent. Fits in jean pocket. Excellent. More you use it the better you will enjoy it.

Pocket size has a wide interpretation. Shirt breast pocket or hunting jacket game pocket? Just off hand I would suggest a smart phone camera and it doesn't have to be used as a telephone. An out-of-date iPhone 4 has fairly decent camera and could be found for less than $50 USD.uote=silverwren]Can I get some recommendations for a pocket-sized point and shoot for my husband? He is not interested in a DSLR but he has a very good eye and needs a decent camera. He is using an old Nikon Coolpix that is wearing out. Thanks.[/quote]

Check again. April 2017 is the date the OP joined not the date of the current post which is Oct 1, 2018 (yesterday).

I have and love the Sony RX100iii. It is very small but the pictures are superb.

Suggest checking reviews for older model Ricoh GRll or newer GRlll. It fits all of the requirements for pocket size.

I have used the Canon sx700hs for some time and really like it. It gives you ability for the control you want with many features. I think it has been updated with the sx730 that has a little longer zoom.

Panasonic LX100. Short zoom range, but great pictures.

Not pocket-sized but the LX100 has a large sensor and Leica lens that will take better images than most "pocket-sized" cameras.

Highly recommended.

Listen to the lonely Panasonic cries from among the Nikon/Canon/Sony cacophony.

I've been in a similar situation for the last 6 months. I own several Nikon DSLR's, but was looking for a compact camera that would fit in my pocket. Although my preference would have been for a Nikon, I wasn't all that happy with the A900. My choice was the Sony RX100 ordered from B&H. The kit included memory card and case, and the cost was $368. Having used it for about a week or so, I'm very pleased with the image quality and it easily fits in the front pocket of my jeans. BTW - buy an extra battery and the Sony dedicated wall charger. They're pretty inexpensive.

or the Panasonic DC-ZS200 if you need more zoom range. Note: they both have a viewfinder and a 1" sensor in a pocketable form factor

I shoot a digital Elph (Canon with 20 mpxl), Google Pixel 2 phone, and have been very surprised about the performance of a Polaroid Snap Touch. I use the Polaroid with kids, but also I can snap a picture on my cellphone and have my Polaroid print it.

Needs a Large pocket: Panasonic Lumix DMC ZS-60. Long zoom range and viewfinder. I had a smaller one, but could not stand with no viewfinder. Cannot get sharp pictures when holding the camera out to see in the monitor. With a viewfinder I have 3 point stability.

I don't have experience with any others, but I'm more than happy with my Canon G9x. I even got a Mark 2 when I accidentally crushed my Mark 1. I've used it a a race track, on vacation, etc. Its low light capabilities were useful at an evening wedding reception. I've blown up cropped images to 20 inches on the long side, plenty of pixels and lens sharpness.

Crushed your Mk I? That's a story I've got to hear!

I know this is heresy in this forum, but take a look at the latest smart phones, Galaxy Note 9, the latest Apples just released, or the latest Google phone with an open mind. They are really something, very convenient, small and handy. You still can control Apature, ISO, and other controls.

Only the purists would consider this heresy. The first iPhone was an iPod with a phone built in. Cellular "phones" today are even more so - much more so. If Sigma (?) can put PS in a camera, why not build a phone into a good compact camera? What a great way to back up your pictures; send them to your computer!

I like the Nikon P7700, which has been replaced by the P7800.

Being a Nikon user, I stayed with Nikon owning D3, D600, D800, D7000 and D500.

Image quality is good with 12.2 MP and 28-200 equivalent zoom. I’ve owned it for approximately 4 years and when I don’t want to carry a DSLR, this goes.

So for a pocket camera I use the iphone7 or the Nikon P7700, which does need a big pocket.
