I concur with rodpark2, I have the Canon Powershot S100 and S95 and love them both. They take great pictures, are easy to use, have all the bells and whistles, and are a true "pocket camera"

pocket-size.... Canon Digital Elph. I have had, for quite some time, a Canon SD-940 that is image stabilized and 12.1 mega-pixels. a great pocket camera with very good image quality. I have it on a neck-type lanyard, and it then sits in my shirt pocket. I go no-where without it. That particular camera may not still be in production, but there are still many canon pocket sized cameras that are truly portable. Have fun. Check out B&H CAMERA shop.

You definitely want to also look into the Olympus Tough TG-5. This is a small, highly capable multi-purpose camera that gives great results. Shockproof and waterproof - in fact the easiest way to clean it up when necessary is to wash it under running water or in the kitchen sink! It comes highly recommended by many users and web sites that reviewed it, and it won't break the bank.

In June I was at the vintage car races at Thompson, CT. A friend who races a Sunbeam Alpine gave me a ride from the paddock to the staging area. Once in his slot, I went to step out over the passenger door. Not sure what happened, I was looking at the other cars coming in or something, and I started to lean out before my foot got to the ground... Fell hard on my right side, scraped knee and elbow.

The G9x was in my right front pants pocket. The crushed LCD had an image on about 25% of its area, the rest was dark. The two little doors that protect the retracted lens no longer opened freely. It still took images, except for the mailslotting caused by the partly open lens doors. Canon said it was not repairable economically and offered a refurb MK 2 for a good price.

Can I get some recommendations for a pocket-sized point and shoot for my husband? He is not interested in a DSLR but he has a very good eye and needs a decent camera. He is using an old Nikon Coolpix that is wearing out. Thanks.

My suggestion would be to get one that has a viewfinder.
Otherwise, in bright sunlight you're just guessing at what you see.
Had one without and will never get another.

I've used Sony pocket sized cameras for years. The DSC series. The last one, I still use as my back up, or use in confined spaces, the DSC-TX20, takes a great pic & has bells & whistles if required.
I researched Sony to buy a DSLR , I can't see why the Canon/Nichon mindset is a big deal. Sony technology has been quality for years. Whatever they make is well made.

I carry a Canon Powershot SX280 is in my front pocket, and it's barely noticeable. The SX280 is a great camera with GPS capability, wireless, and 20x zoom. It's a little on the expensive side for a Powershot, but I think it was worth it. Here's some sample photos.

I like the Nikon P7700, which has been replaced by the P7800.

Being a Nikon user, I stayed with Nikon owning D3, D600, D800, D7000 and D500.

Image quality is good with 12.2 MP and 28-200 equivalent zoom. I’ve owned it for approximately 4 years and when I don’t want to carry a DSLR, this goes.

So for a pocket camera I use the iphone7 or the Nikon P7700, which does need a big pocket.

I prefer the Nikon Coolpix line. Currently have an S9600 16mp 22x. Bought it used but brand new condition for $75 to replace my S8200 which was stolen.

Also, check out the "Panasonic Lumix" line of Point & Shoot Cameras, I owned one before moving on to my Nikon DSLR Camera. High quality "Leica" Lens, produce Sharp and Clear images.

If you happen to shoot video with this camera, update the firmware if not already done. It corrects an issue with short battery life when shooting video.

I have the Canon Powershot SX 230 HS, which is two models before this one. It has a 14x zoom. It also has a 12 megapixel backlit CMOS sensor and GPS capability, though if you turn on the GPS, it shortens battery life considerably. Both of these cameras would be considered "old" at this point. Mine has taken a lot of great pictures. I replaced it (but still have it) with the G7X Mark II, but would take it out in a minute if I needed it. It takes fine pictures.

I've used the S100 and have very good results. I like that it even shoots raw.
