Didn't make it to Rustic Iron, but did have great meals at the Chisos Mountains Lodge restaurant and in Terlingua. Temperature at the lodge (elevation about 5400 feet) never got above 85 degrees, even in the middle of July. I had not been there before, so spent quite a bit of time just soaking it all in that I might have been capturing images.

The terrain is extremely varied and very vertical.

Thanks for the kind comments. I'll choose and post a few additional images.

Here is an additional image as promised. This is a panorama of 5 images of the mouth of Santa Elena Canyon. Topography, geography, and geology of the Big Bend region are pretty complex, and looking at a good topo map will help understand what is going on here. The short version is that the Rio Grande cuts through a large "plateau" which straddles the boundary between the United States and Mexico. This view is taken with the center looking just a little south of west.

Manual exposure based on matrix metering of the center portion of the image was used to insure consistency among frames. Nikkor 24-70 lens at 32mm. ISO 200, f13, 1/640 second. The only post processing is lightening the right cliff face slightly to provide better separation from the canyon walls behind.

This is an early afternoon scene. My goal is to return and recreate this as an early morning image for more uniform lighting. I would also capture component images with vertical framing in order to facilitate stitching the panorama together and to capture more of the sky.

Great photos. Being in Texas, I have been there several times. The Terlingua cemetery is a must for the early morning/late afternoon photographer but being an old cemetery, the graves face east if that is part of your planning.
Some graves are real unusual as they represent the person.

I have returned to UHH after an absence of almost a year. I felt that some additional education and practice was called for, since I was finding myself 'out of step' on a number of topics of discussion. One effort that I undertook was to participate in a night sky/low light workshop at Big Bend National Park and some of the surrounding areas. Here is an image that I captured during a session in Terlingua, an old mercury mining town on the western edge of the park. Nikon D810 and Nikkor 14-24mm zoom at 14mm and f2.8. Exposure was 1/3 second (it was about 25 minutes after sunset). I will post a couple of additional images in a few minutes.
