I just got asked this by an employee, so here are my thoughts shared with him. If you are new to photography, the 2 kit lenses are a great starting point. Despite the difficulty in taking captivating pictures with a wide angle, if you must, I’d buy the Dx 10-20 mm for under $400. Stop there. Use your kit lenses and learn your camera and your personal style. Wait a few months or a year to buy a fast lens and an extended zoom. Wait until you know what you are passionate about: Portrait, wildlife, sports, night, Astro, landscape, cityscape will all push you towards different lenses. FYI Besides my kit lenses, I have almost all Fx or older film lenses and used them on a D90 and 300S with great results. Made it cheaper to move to an FX body.

" This one looks promising: [ Tokina AT-X PRO 11-16mm f/2.8 SD MF DX IF AF Lens ] "
The same Tokina 11-20 is better. there will be no "gap" missing so you will have 11-55 in 2 lenses compared to 11-16, 18-55 w/ a gap. ok so its only 2mm missing, lol, but I have the 11-20 and the Tokina is a real good lens.

I also have had the d3400 with both kit lenses 18-55p vr and 70-300p (no vr) for about 10 months. Other than my 18-200 Tamron which I already owned I have held off any addl lens purchases until I have decided how these lenses will not fit my needs. Surprisingly the 70-300 is very sharp even without vr. I have taken it to the car races with nice results. If I had to buy any lenses right now I would probably buy a half dozen that strike me as great and hardly ever use most of them. (You’ve got to want what you need not need what you want.) IMHO
