Yesterday I stop to see a friend about something, he was rebuilding his father maple syrup builder. He putting in all new equipment. One part of the equipment he was putting in yesterday. It was made in Canada, so he had to pay $1,500 tariff on it. I came be in Canada by car in a half hour. So a lot of goods come in from Canada here. The best of maple syrup equipment come from Canada. Maple syrup making is a second income for people up here in Northern New York. Thank to Trump and his tariffs that second income will be cut back big time.

First of all this is a photography forum not a political one. Second point is that if your friend made his living as a dairy farmer he would have been facing 300 percent tariffs from Canada for decades. I have a lot more sympathy for the dairy farmer who works 7 days a week trying to make a living for he and his family than your friend who incurred an additional $1,500 dollar cost on a project, as meaningful to him as it might be.

I thought UGHHwas for photography, not for all this political stuff. I am so tired of all of these commercials and everything you see every where.

This comment is in the correct section... general chit chat... or maybe if it gets to "heated" moved it to the attic. (Anyone who does not want to see this type of comment, can simply change the "topics" that show on their feed)

As for the $1500 tariff, we should all know what is going to happen. The cost of this producer's maple syrup will be increased to compensate for his additional costs. So the consumer ends up paying it. But here is the kicker... If he sells his maple syrup for say $0.50 more per gallon. AFTER he sells 3000 gallons ( for most producers 1 or 2 seasons) will he drop the price $0.50 per gallon? I doubt it. So for the length of time it takes to pay off the tariff, he raises his price and his profits in dollars (not margin) remain the same. BUT once paid off, his profits are increased THANKS to the tariff.

PLUS I am in agreement that this tariff war will be short and eventually parties will negotiate it to where it really needs to be, FREE TRADE ON ALL PRODUCTS, otherwise it is not FREE TRADE.

It is called the cost of doing business.

Get over it.

I do not enjoy VAT in Italy being 22% but when conducting business, buying or selling it is accepted and don't complain.

Plus buying simple camera gear from the USA is hit with custom fees and the VAT making it most times totally out of the question.

The cost of the tariff pass on to the custom is not a good idea. A custom will turn around and stop buying the item. So what happen to the person making the item?
NCMtnMan: What the hell do you think my friend is? welfare rat? he a dairy farmer. Like I said making maple syrup is a second income to help pay off the bills from the farmer. State has put in new laws about the making of maple syrup, so if he wants to keep making maple syrup he had to up grade his and his father equipment.
Swartfort: you are talking voodoo economic. Short or long war is all about destroying people and things.
For the rest of you: What is General Chit-Cha(NON-PHOTOGRAPHY TALK)? Answer, please.

You made no mention in your original post that he was a dairy farmer. Nor, did I make any statement that would have inferred that I considered him a welfare rat. I completely sympathize with his situation as a dairy farmer since I grew up on a farm and know how difficult of a life it can be. Nor, did you include that he was having to upgrade the equipment due to a change in state laws. All things which put a different light on his situation. However, if he cares about his dairy farm business like I'm sure he does, then he should recognize that what is being done by Trump is an effort to get those 300 percent dairy tariffs removed so he can hopefully have a better income from his primary source of income. Perhaps he and other dairy farmers wouldn't need a second income if they were able to operate in a truly fair trade environment.

You're comparing a maple syrup "side job" to the rest of the country getting screwed?

What product have you stopped purchasing that you purchased in 2010? 2000? Prices have gone up since then, have you stopped buying gas? Meat? Bread? Maple syrup? When I produced maple syrup in late 1980,s I sold it for (at a profit) $15/gallon. Now it sells for way over twice that. Production is up, Demand is up. VOODOO? We often look at short term effects rather than long term affects. There is a difference. Either a product will have value and continue to sell, or it won't (horse/buggy whips) and it won't. The market will prevail, always has, always will.

Your topic got moved to "the attic" where it belongs. I looked at your history, you have not, as far as I have seen, posted a single image. Why are you here????

The dairy situation is much more complicated than that. In addition, we actually run a trade surplus with Canada in dairy. Politically no Canadian PM can give on the dairy tariffs.

What part of "we have a dairy trade surplus with Canada" don't you understand? There are certain dairy products that don't have a high tariff and American dairy has shifted to them. Politically, a Canadian PM cannot give ground on the dairy tariffs.
