it's what they do.... they love it... comes natural and gets better with more training and practice.... we have had two and never trained them at all to herd. all we had to say was "bring 'em home" and wait. 10 minutes and they were all in the barn........ nice pics, by the way, thanks

It really is what they do! I can't think of a more convincing example of "hard-wired behavior". Thank you for the visit and comment.

Fantastic series Phil. These dogs are just amazing how they control the movements of the the sheep.

Thanks Mike! When I get next year's sheep dog trials schedule I will send you a copy if you are interested. Several are in Marin and Sonoma Co.

Thanks for the kind words Alan! The Sheep Dog Association in my area has a website with a very active schedule available. Google could be your friend. Cheers my friend, hope all is well with you.

Great action series, Phil! That is a hard working dog and very dedicated!

Thanks Carol! When you watch them at work you can certainly call them dedicated. When you live in the same household with one, and you don't have any sheep, your might call them obsessed. Always good to hear from you.

Not sure if it four or five different dogs here, their marking are so similar that it is often only the collar that helps me sort them out. I probably should have thrown in a brown and white for variety. One thing for sure they all have one common characteristic hanging out! Thanks for the visit and kind comment Donna.

Bossing sheep can require a lot of running around. It is hot work, and sometimes it makes your tongue hang out a little.....or a lot!

Nice set Phil.

An excellent action series, and the star of the show appears to have earned his kibble!

My brother and I were raised with/by one (Buster) at Ft Peck, Montana eighty plus years ago. No sheep so he herded us. My mother told me he would shoulder us away from roads, grip the seat of our diapers/pants to keep us from climbing and just generally babysit. He was a great dog. Our Dad built him a dog house but he wouldn't use it, slept in the snow. He would burrow into a snowbank.
