It's free and open source, and runs on GNU/Linux, OS/X and Windows.
Version 1.0 came out in 1998. The current stable version is 2.10.6.

How does it compare with PhotoShop? Is it easy to install and use?

(I apologize if this has already been discussed, but GIMP may have
gotten better. Also, PhotoShop and Lightroom have recently gone to a
subscription model: they own it, you lease it.)

In a way, that is true for any purchased or "rented" software isn't it?
They own it, and you get a license (lease) to use it. But it will never be yours.
The only difference is that with the subscription model, you buy the license for a month at a time and when you stop paying, the program stops working.
With buying the license you pay a lump sum all at once, and don't need to worry about monthly payments.
Oh, wait a minute, another difference: the updates/upgrades are included with the subscription model.
If they are included with the license model at all, they would be limited.
