GIMP is short for "GNU Image Manipulation Program."
It's free and open source, and runs on GNU/Linux, OS/X and Windows.
Version 1.0 came out in 1998. The current stable version is 2.10.6.
https://www.gimp.org/How does it compare with PhotoShop? Is it easy to install and use?
(I apologize if this has already been discussed, but GIMP may have
gotten better. Also, PhotoShop and Lightroom have recently gone to a
subscription model: they own it, you lease it.)
There are a number of folks on here who use it. They will be along.
I do keep it updated on my computer and it integrates nicely with Darktable for raw files. It has come a long way from when I was first introduced to it,

I love GIMP. As with anything there is a learning curve but plenty of videos online.
I can do just about anything that I have done with photoshop.
And it has one of the most convoluted menu systems I've ever seen built into a program of any sort.
As for the "They own it" comment regarding PS. What I do with or to it after I pay for it is none of their business and shouldn't matter to them at all.

I have no trouble at all using gimp, either via the toolbar or via the menu system.
That's all good to hear. Thanks!
How do the features compare with PhotoShop?
Use GIMP everyday, I can't compare it to photoshop as I have never used photoshop on my photos, but gimp does what I need it to do.
GIMP is a marvelous photo editing software that does a fine job when compared to some of the better subscription options. Warning, however, there is a steep learning curve to get started.
Try it! It is free, so what do you have to lose?? And a lot of YouTube videos on GIMP are worth looking at.

"Recently gone to subscription"? Where have you been for the last 3 or 4 years! And you should be able to answer your post title, version 1.0 came out in 1998, so, NO, I don't think anyone has tried GIMP!
I have GIMP 2.10.6 installed on my Mac desktop and laptop along with Photoshop CC, Darktable and a few other editing programs. I took a Udemy course in GIMP and find it similar to Photoshop CC in operation (there are some differences). For free it is a great editor and if I was to drop my Adobe subscription I would chose GIMP over Affinity (which I have) or some of the other editing programs I own.

If you know how to use Photoshop then just go to youtube and search for various gimp uses and see for yourself. If you aren't familiar with either, then it's going to be hard to tell you the differences because they are so different. The bottom line is that they both do pixel editing. But the other thing to consider is that Photoshop and Lightroom uses are youtubed and can be learned easy because there's so much information free for the asking. GIMP is free but there's not as many tutorials available as there are for the Adobe products. You need to decide on one or the other because it's a waste of time trying to figure out two completely different applications. It's almost impossible. You need to choose one and then focus all your time tutoring yourself on just that one.

I hate to be nasty, but there is a "SEARCH" function available on this site.

I have used both Gimp and Photoshop. No contest!
Instead of using the free Gimp I would rather download the free Photoshop CS2 available on the Adobe site. Not only will it take you years to learn all the potential of Photoshop's incredible abilities, but it will better prepare you for the time when you are so proficient that only the latest version Photoshop will do.
