Robyn, I have to ask. papi is right, the D500 and the Canon you have are both really great cameras with astounding resolving power. Are you simply looking to "move up" to full frame or did you recently win the lottery?

I shot with a D800 for over six years and two weeks ago I treated myself to a D850 for my birthday. I did my homework and read all the reviews of the D850 and knew that I was buying a special camera -what I didn't realize was just how good the camera is. The focus and acquisition of focus is, unless you invest in a D5, in a league of it's own and those 45.7mp with no AA filter give me a level of detail that you just have to see to believe.

I was at the Best Buy in Concordville, I think it's Concordville, Delaware, looking for a shortie tripod for my G1X III and they had a D850 on display. I picked it up and played with it for a few minutes and it felt good. I liked it a lot but realistically, I don't need one I just want one. It really won't give me much of anything I'd use on a daily basis I didn't already have. If I want to deal with enormous image files I'll get out my 5DSr. If I want high-speed bursts I can use my D500. I decided I'll simply wait until it goes on sale for a more reasonable price, then I'll get one for my collection.

You had a momentary bout of GAS....it's like resisting hunger when you see and smell a delicious meal and dessert. I think the D810 had the same price pattern, now $2700 new and around 1500-2200 used, so we can expect the same pattern perhaps with the D850 in a year or two maybe? Focus first on upgrading your lens collection to go with your eventual D850 acquisition.

Yes, sales are nice.

Problem with sales on items like the D850 is, they usually aren't really well advertised and they usually don't last very long.

I already have several Nikkor and Sigma lenses that will work just fine on the D850. My interest in the camera is, I don't have a Nikon full frame camera and the D850 may be the best digital camera Nikon has ever made.

I, too was attracted by the specs and then I did what I always do, I asked myself: What does this one do that I need to do that I can't do already with what I own? This approach saves lots of money! Only the cognoscenti know if you're toting a D850 or a D200! Unless you are buying gear to impress, my protocol works!

Yep I am in a similar situation but have Nikkor and Tamron FF lenses (and adding more)...aside from GAS the camera does offer intriguing and practical possibilities for a FF DSLR. Love the handling when I tried it out at B&H several times.

Ive been using a D300 all these years never had a problem. Just bought a D850.

Love it. A huge jump up the line for me. I’ll keep the D850 for as many years. It’s the photog that matters, not the camera.

I like how it will find the closest eye and give sharp focus. Cute feature. Lots of very useful features on it too. Very well thought out gear. Will be upgrading a couple lenses though.

I’ve also got a few medium format film cameras. And a full set of MF lenses 40mm-300mm. Haven’t used film for quite a while though. I used my filmmscanner a lot though. Many years of film - both negatives and slides.

After 20 meg cameras showed up, not much need for film anymore. The D850 is up to the low end MF universe in quality. Love the dynamic range of the D850.

Your judgemental, depreciative post is not sharing; and far from constructive.

You only go around once. I have named my D850, "My Last Camera" and am enjoying it more with every use. I went out on a pro photo tour yesterday in Moab, and he also concurred the D850 is his "last camera." It is OK to upgrade until you feel you have it all. That may be at a D3400, D5100, D7500 or D750 level. The D850 will not necessarily make you a better photographer, but makes it easier to do certain things. That's what I like. And I like the feel of a "big boy" camera. Not sure I want to use a camera that feels like a point and shoot. I noticed walking the trails yesterday that a few ounces one way or the other would not be a deal breaker. I wouldn't have been huffing and puffing if my camera weighed 6 ounces heavier or lighter. More time in the gym would overcome that. I don't think anyone should buy a D850 because I like mine. If you love your D750 as I did, stay with it. A D3400 will take great photos also. I don't NEED a D850, but I sure love it. And in MY opinion, I deserve it. A reward for all those 12 hour work days, "back then."

I used to think so, but now I’m living twice.
