This shot had some minimal postprocessing via Photoshop Elements 15. I used some contrast enhancement, darkened blacks, boosted saturation a little. No cropping. I had to take probably 50 shots to get one without clouds or airplanes. Arrive at least an hour before sunset to get set up, then wait until astronomical twilight to begin. I was there 2 hours after dark taking shots, adjusting fill light on rocks, etc. Planning, effort, and patience.

That wasn't nice to burst our bubble. We all thought you went out after the 10 o'clock news, setup in 5 minutes, took two shots, packed it up, and went home. Thanks for let some of the newbies know what it sometimes takes to get the shot. Your efforts were well rewarded. For the rest of us older photograghers, thanks for the encouragement to stick it out. There have been a number of time we have gone out, and no matter what the planning, effort, and patience, we have come home with nothing. Your shooting keeps us all hopeful.

Thanks for the kind words.

Actually, on this trip the clouds have really screwed me. I spent 2 nights in Moab under solid clouds so I didn't get the shot with Balanced Rock I had planned. Then on to Goblin Valley. Night #1 had clouds moving through and I always set up facing south to get the galactic center, but the clouds kept making the shot "not great". My wife suggested moving to the other side of the 3 sisters and shoot north. That's the shot I posted. I love it but was disappointed not to get the southern shot. 2nd night at Goblin, incoming Thunderstorm and no pix. Then travelling around Utah and had a couple clear nights but no good foreground. I planned a shot at the Temple of Sinawa in Zion, only to find out you've got to be out of that area by 9:15PM. CRAP! On my way home now. 1 good shot out of 2 weeks travels. That's how really tough the Milky Way is.

All the gorgeous scenery is on the way to Boise. I suggest searching UHH archives for "Boise" to get an idea of some of the views around here. For sure you will want to stop at BSU and get pics of the famous blue turf football field. The athletic hall of fame is open all the time and opens to a great panorama of the field. Be sure to post some pics for us.

Thanks
