If it's the photographer and not the camera why do we keep upgrading?

The quote that caught my attention "We love shiny new things" is attributable to burkphoto.

You think it's a troll question? In fact this matter has been bothering me a lot. People don't want to give credit for the great pictures to their cameras but yet keep looking for better camera.

I like the golf analogy. I am not a pro at either golf or photography. I buy fitted PING clubs so that I get a few more good shots a round. With lousy clubs that are too short, I play even worse golf then usual. It’s not the end of the world to make bad shots, but hitting nice shots is more fun. With nice camera equipment, I can take better shots than if I’m shooting with a P&S. I enjoyed my D300S, I did not like my D800 even though I was excited to move to full frame. I was happy to sell it. I really like my D850 with matched lenses because I take much better photos than with my mirrorless or with my older cameras. I usually take pictures for the sheer joy of doing so and the new sophisticated equipment makes that both more challenging and more fun.

After a few upgrades, maybe it is the photographer but they won't believe it?

I think that it is an important question, so perhaps it was the presentation of the question that provoked my reaction. We have a lot of troll questions on UHH right now - again! - and I do not in any way consider you to be a troll, Sir. That said, I will give you my concise answer.

My film cameras continue to function, subject to mechanical/electronic failure, since every roll of film is a new sensor, and chemistry evolves. Digital technology has, as Scott McNealy expressed it very well, "has the shelf life of a banana!"

My old digital cameras still function at their expected level, but the technology moves and new capabilities appear quite rapidly. Even with a conservative outlook, I would expect to up grade every five years or so for a camera body. Not so much for lenses or other accessories, and the camera body is less than than 10% of my system investment.

That said, old technology well used can still produce superior results than new technology in inexperienced hands, but new technology in experienced hands is a different question.

Take care, good Sir!

Bebu, I think part of it is just human nature.

No question, as many here have said, there are very valid reasons for "upgrading", primarily to get capabilities that just aren't available with their current gear.

But, but... some of us just buy things because we want to have the latest, whatever it is: cars, IPhones, clothing styles, computers, TVs, books, music...and cameras...

Then why there are many who got upset if someone see their pictures and say you have good camera.

That's because he likes the attention your "block me" posts give him.

Either that or this site has a limit to how many people you can block.

Touch on the limits of his technical knowledge or the quality of his photography and you'll find you're added to his ignore list PDQ.

Am now retired and on a fixed income and have to plan purchases, so I have to ask the question if this purchase will help me be a better photographer? Now, most of my purchases are photography books and trips to beautiful places with phenomenal opportunities to take great pictures.

FYI- Him blocking you only inhibits you from responding to his posts and sending him private messages.
It does NOT stop you from SEEING his posts.

Appreciate the tip and those who responded. Regardless, my posting was just another way of telling him how much he was missed!
