If it's the driver and not the car, why do we keep buying new cars?
Because the tools used to create the image improve.

Pretty much. I really enjoy having my 4,070 digital music files on a 64 GB flash drive plugged into the USB port of my car's stereo system. Bought the car in January 2017 and have never had to listen to the radio in it. Don't have to change tapes or CDs. Now, finally, I enjoy driving again!

In my opinion the same person that said it's the photographer and not the camera knows that the better camera help him/her to take better pictures.

Wear? Reliability? in a car that is!

However, my answer would be;
Because money burns a hole in my pocket and if I'm not sitting around with at least 16-18 cameras on the shelf, I feel lonesome!

I upgrade because a newer camera will do something that my old one will not do or do well. And I want to do that something...
And, I'm willing to pay the price.

It's like the saying... "A skilled craftsman never blames his tools."
To which I respond, "Because a skilled craftsman has good tools."
And along with this line of thinking, cameras and equipment are simply the tools we use to capture images. Depending on what kind of images you want to capture, you'll want to use different tools.
And new technologies make it easier to capture, store, and transfer images. I laugh at how many rolls of film I used to carry when I traveled as a boy, the anticipation of wondering if my pictures would come out, ordering duplicates so I could physically give a picture to my friends, etc.
So many reasons to buy new equipment, even though it ia clearly possible to capture great images on any device, even handmade pinhole cameras.
Don't know about others but, for me, after so many years photographing I sometimes have trouble working up enthusiasm to go out and "find something" to shoot. However, anytime I get a new camera or new lens, the urge to go "check-it-out" comes right back and my "mojo" is renewed. I really didn't need to sell my D800 and get a D850. But I have used the 850 more in the past 6 months than I had used the 800 for more than a year.
