Nikon F was the first ever camera that I purchased myself back in 1971

Excellent choice of camera.

My first true SLR camera was a Minolta SRT-101, which I purchased in 1971. I had a Canon "Canonet" rangefinder camera, but the SLR truly freed me to explore the world of photography.

In fact, I just came across it yesterday while looking through some boxes for other stuff...

My first purchased camera was a Minolta SR-T200 while I was in the Navy. Shot a ton of Kodachrome and had the camera for a lot of years.

MY FIRST WAS A KODAK PONY IN 1958, THEN AN MINOLTA SLR BOUGHT IN A PX IN KOREA 1960 , USED FOR MANY YEARS WITH LOTS OF KODACHROME. GOT STOLEN THEN WENT TO NIKON FE, STILL HAVE IT. CAN'T BRING MYSELF TO GO DIGITAL!

My first 35mms was a Fujica ST801, which was the first camera to feature a LED light meter. Later, I bought Nikon FE. I still have both cameras.

I used the Kodak Hawkeye as a kid. In 1956, a friend showed me his mother's Exakta and I was thrilled by its abilities. My father had to sign the contract at the camera store and I dutifully paid it off in one year. I used it throughout my time in the Navy. In the 80's I upgraded to a Nikon FM and then later to a D300 and many more digital cameras. The bottom line seems to be this: it is not so much the camera as it is the photographer.

Gotcha. Not every member here started before 1980. How about the "newer folks"? Anybody start out with Autofocus or Digital?

The Miranda G model was called: "The poor man's Nikon F" back in the sixties. I started with it and added many screens, finders, and lenses. It was a very well made camera and highly versatile. The exact camera is still being used today by a close friend of mine that I gave it to maybe 25 yrs ago! Still works perfectly.

I had mine refinished with black chrome. Looked better than black paint. Wish I still had it, just for sentimental reasons.

The first camera I actually bought for myself was a Fuji in the early 1960’s. Pretty sure it was called “Fujica 35.” This was a pretty cool rangefinder with split image focusing, built in light meter. Once you dialed in the exposure, the shutter speed and aperture were mechanically linked to keep the same value. Gee, somehow I managed to survive without a built-in flash or a video function! Since then I have been a Canon guy, starting with an EOS 630, to my present 60D.

This is not my first camera but it is the first one I ever bought myself back in 1971 and I took this picture of it a few minutes ago with my Iphone 7plus to be able to post it here. I have had a few of these over the years but this is the actual original camera that I started out with. I was eighteen and went with my dad to the local camera store and told the owner that I wanted a camera that would make me happy and I would not regret buying and this is what he put on the counter. A Nikon F body, FTN meter, and a F2 50mm lens and I can say that I have never been let down by this camera and it looks and operates as good today as when I bought it back in 1971.

What was your first camera to purchase.
This is not my first camera but it is the first on... (show quote)

I had the Nikon F2 (and loved it), after my Voigtlaender and a bunch of lenses got stolen!

My first camera was a Minolta SRT-101 also. I had the 50mm lens and later bought a zoom lens. It zoomed out to around 300mm if I recall correctly. Maybe it was 200. It's all gone now. I gave it to the Goodwill along with a lot of old equipment when I bought a new Nikon film camera in the early 2000s. I try not to hang on to old stuff I don't use anymore. I took a lot of great pictures with it. Built my own darkroom in the garage and used an enlarger I bought at a yard sale. Learned to load my own film from bulk and process it myself. Good times. I was young and kid free at the time and had time and a little cash to spend on the hobby.

My 1st was a Miranda back in the very late 60s. Don't have it anymore but it was really good. Then I moved up to the Canon F1 with a 50mm F1.4 and I've been with Canon ever since.

My buddy loaned me a Pentax K1000 for an extended period of time, like a year and a half. Great Camera! Used that in high school for photo class and club and everything else. I learned that camera inside and out.
Then my folks bought me this as a gift for graduation from High School. I still shoot with it. Will never let go even if it dies.

I also have a Canon A1, a Nikon FG, another K1000 and a few others. Think I may add an Olympus or two. Maybe an FA. Lust after a Pentax LX. Pretty much every camera I wanted back then.

My first was a Pentax Spotmatic, but it wasn't long till I tired of the screw mount, and traded it on a Nikon F, black with standard prism and the 35/2. Still own this outfit but mostly for sentimental reasons..
