This is not my first camera but it is the first one I ever bought myself back in 1971 and I took this picture of it a few minutes ago with my Iphone 7plus to be able to post it here. I have had a few of these over the years but this is the actual original camera that I started out with. I was eighteen and went with my dad to the local camera store and told the owner that I wanted a camera that would make me happy and I would not regret buying and this is what he put on the counter. A Nikon F body, FTN meter, and a F2 50mm lens and I can say that I have never been let down by this camera and it looks and operates as good today as when I bought it back in 1971.

What was your first camera to purchase.

I don't have it any more as it was stolen from me but my first camera I ever bought was the Nikon F2AS in 1977.

Nice camera! I can't remember what the first was (I've only been shooting film for about 4 or 5 years) but my favorites are: Oly Trip 35 and Nikon FE2.

Those two are in rotation always.

These were back when cameras were built to take abuse and keep going.

My first true SLR camera was a Minolta SRT-101, which I purchased in 1971. I had a Canon "Canonet" rangefinder camera, but the SLR truly freed me to explore the world of photography.

In fact, I just came across it yesterday while looking through some boxes for other stuff...

My father bought me a practica camera out of Alden’s catalog when I was 12. All manual match needle metering 2 lenses and manual flash ( you had to know how far away from your subject you were before setting proper exposure). When I was 14 I bought myself a Nikon FE that I used for 20+ years until it was stolen. Great camera. Dependable and rugged. Had an F2A since have moved to digital and currently shooting a D4 and considering jumping ship to Sony after 40 yrs w Nikon. Mirrorless seems the way to go. My son can’t lift the D4 w 2.8 glass and flash. ( too heavy for a 9yo)

During the 50s I used Kodak Brownies or equivalents, then bought a Honeywell Pentax H-3 in 1961. It was an excellent camera but I hated its lack of an exposure meter and the need to use a handheld meter. It was a thrill to ditch that Gossen Pilot after buying a Minolta 570 in 1984.

The first really high-quality SLR I owned. We will be celebrating our 47th anniversary together this coming Christmas Eve. My mum and dad gave this to me for my Christmas present. The F and I have had a number of adventures together and still continue to do so. Used, but never abused.

My first "real" camera was the same as yours. It was my birthday present to me in 1971. I shot everything I came across. What a great way to learn photography. Since I wasn't wealthy, I made sure I really wanted that photo because film could add up quickly. I love that camera and still have it.

One time, I did not have the strap around my neck and another tourist hit me from behind. The camera flew down the main staircase at Marble House in RI. It landed at the bottom of the stairs. I really died that moment. I ran down the stairs hoping it wasn't destroyed (it took me awhile to save for that camera). After examining it, the only thing wrong was a small dent in the lens hood. It worked just fine. I had someone look at it and nothing was broken. This camera was so well made it escaped after hitting all those stairs. From that moment on, I always have a camera secured to me.

My first purchased camera was a Minolta SR-T200 while I was in the Navy. Shot a ton of Kodachrome and had the camera for a lot of years.

Nikkormat FTn with 50mm f/1.4 lens, August, 1969. I bought it with money I made with a borrowed Canon FX over the previous year. In 1980, I traded this and some cash for a used 24mm f/2.8.

I inherited a 1971 Nikon FTn in April, 1972. It also had the leather case you show here, and another 50mm f/1.4. In 1980, I traded the 50mm, a Vivitar 35mm f/2.8, and some cash for a new 35mm f/2.0 Nikkor.

I still have that and more Nikon film gear, but haven’t used it since 2005.

My first camera, bought in 1968, was a 35mm Yashika rangefinder (can't recall the model name). Sharp lens.
Did a lot of darkroom work with b/w film. Was in the Army in Germany at the time and used the photo lab to develop my photos.
I also shot color slides.

While stationed in Germany, I bought my first slr at the PX, which was a Minolta srt 202. When it got stolen while on leave in Georgia, I immediately went to. Pawn shop (I was only a PFC and couldn’t afford another new 202) and found an srt 101. I had that until recently and sold it. I do still have film cameras, a Canon AE-1 and a Nikon FE-2, and still use them.
