My first camera, bought in 1968, was a 35mm Yashika rangefinder (can't recall the model name). Sharp lens.
Did a lot of darkroom work with b/w film. Was in the Army in Germany at the time and used the photo lab to develop my photos.
I also shot color slides.

This is my Yashika Rangefinder that I was shooting with before I purchased my Nikon F, both of them had leather camera cases on them

You lucky dog! All I could afford was a used Miranda, but I got experience on ya. Bought it in 1966.

My first SLR was a Mamiya 1000.

Prior to my Nikon F, I used a Zeiss Ikon, still have it but no photographs of it. I also used this from the time I was 5 years old through today, and into the future. Though, with a couple of additional lenses.

I feel you're more lucky than I was. Back around 68 when I was 13 my cousin wanted to buy a used Miranda from an American GI in Vietnam. He brought the camera to my dad for him to check it out. I got a chance to play with the very first SLR I ever had my hand on. I had been using my dad's Petri 7s rangefinder at that time. After seeing the Miranda I knew that I would buy an SLR and not a rangefinder. Didn't have my own camera until 1977 when I bought my Nikon F2AS.

I think my first slr was a new old stock Miranda G back in 72. Not built as well as the Nikon F I had later, but still very capable. Still have a photo I shot with it in my portfolio.

Nice photo, Bob!

This is not my first camera but it is the first one I ever bought myself back in 1971 and I took this picture of it a few minutes ago with my Iphone 7plus to be able to post it here. I have had a few of these over the years but this is the actual original camera that I started out with. I was eighteen and went with my dad to the local camera store and told the owner that I wanted a camera that would make me happy and I would not regret buying and this is what he put on the counter. A Nikon F body, FTN meter, and a F2 50mm lens and I can say that I have never been let down by this camera and it looks and operates as good today as when I bought it back in 1971.

What was your first camera to purchase.
This is not my first camera but it is the first on... (show quote)

My fist one was a Praktica Super TL SLR, in 1970, following that I got the one you have, the Nikon photomic FTn plus Nikkormat FTn. I still have these two Nikon and 35mmf2.8; 43-86mm f3.5; 135mm f2.8, that I won't part with them!

Not the first camera I'd ever purchased, but this was shot with that first camera (a Pentax MX). What can I say? I was late to the game, I guess. Years before, I'd been given a Polaroid Swinger (woo-wee!) for Xmas one year while in Uncle Sam's employ, so that one wouldn't count, exactly.

Pic: in my 'Studio' (aka, the dining room in the apartment where I lived at the time) making a copy neg of a friend's grandmother (or somebody).

That photo setup in the attached image looks familiar, except I used a music stand.

I see you and rmalarz both have the Nikon AR-1 "soft shutter" button extender. The FTn was the first serious camera I ever owned and I ended up with three or four as my main pro arsenal for years. IMO the AR-1 was an essential item for a camera with the FTn meter-finder. Back then, of course, Nikon had a million little accessories. Somewhere in this world I have an SF-1 gadget that let me see the Metz 60CT1 readylight in my eyepiece and a Nikon DL-1 that lit up the finder's meter needle.

Henry, I have one of those meter lights, as well. Very helpful in low light conditions.

I still have the Nikon F2 that I acquired at the age of about 20.
What a great camera.
