Guilty of not reading all the previous posts. Try a different USB port. My son just built my new PC. Camera, printer and other USB devices work on the front ports. Flash drives don't, only on the backside ports.

Unless there is something electronically or physically wrong with an USB drive of any kind it should be as easy as plug and play. Plug it into the USB 3 and plug it into the power supply if needed. If it is powered by the USB than it has to be plugged into the USB 3 input. Not all your USB's are powered USB 3 inputs. look for the blue colored one that's it. Then window 10 should pop up and see the drive. You can then format it and there you go. Making it work with WiFi or blue tooth should be that easy too. If it is blue tooth then you need to make sure your computer came with a blue tooth built in. If not you will need a blue tooth adapter added to your new computer.

I have used a Passport back-up drive for years and it always served me well for it's intended purpose. Mine is a Mac application and I have no complaints.

I'm very happy to hear all of the experiences from others. None of it is particularly useful, though, especially ideas from those who didn't read the thread. I also have several dozen offers to either take the drive off my hands or fix it for me. I do appreciate all of the offers of help in one form or another. I don't have the time to respond individually to them all at the moment, but any sincere offers of help are appreciated.

The drive is not defective. It is the software that sucks. It is connected properly to a USB3 port. WD support has kindly sent me a link to the page to download the software that won't install. It does not need to be reformatted or defragmented according to my diagnostic software. If they continue to be this helpful, I will either use it purely as a hard drive for backup or give it to a worthy cause. No more responses, please....I have been working on this issue for two and a half days now and my time is worth a lot more than the fifty bucks I paid for it.

Thank you.

Andy

Andy,
Here is a tech support number. Call them. 1-800-275-4932 Hope they can help.

Also, Google the one you have and all kinds of web sites come up.

I have a 2 TB WD Passport Ultra and it was blank after I loaded everything on it. At this number, they told me where to take it and it was just 17 miles from my house in my City!!!

The reason mine was blank after I loaded my computer on it is because a few days later when I was looking at it, not knowing what I was doing, I deleted everything on it. When I took it to their office, they diagnosed it for me and claimed they could get everything back, but at the time I just could not afford it.

It hasn't failed. It just will not install. The setup PDF is more than useless - following the instructions leads inevitably to "Cannot find webpage" 404 error. Can't connect simultaneously to both Internet and Passport. Software won't update. Installed both Access and Backup software, but neither one will start. Probably just too old for my setup.

Headed for the landfill. After I throw it against a stone wall, just to take out my frustrations.... I also have a good sized sledge.
I wish I wold have seen your post yesterday. I had one for my desktop, and yesterday I bought a second one for my laptop. They both work flawlessly. And I’m 71 years old, and far from tech savy. Maybe you have a flawed one. Take it back.

I spent two hours on hold on that number, thanks. With several disconnects

OK I will stop, after one last question:
All all anti-virus, malware etc turned off/suspended and all other programs closed while attempting an install? A lot of software will not install or be corrupted during install unless they are the only thing running at the time. Though at the start most of those will ask if everything is closed or turned off.

Yes. Turned off all virus protection software and all other programs. I have now deleted everything from the disk. It's an external drive only, with no card reading capacity, no wireless, and no software. I will download some backup software from somewhere and use it purely as a backup, while I purchase another Seagate, which has worked well for me on two different computers.

Thank you all for your concern and offers of help.

If anyone wants it, send me a PM and I'll send it free for postage. You may be more tech savvy than I am and can make use of it, but it's a piece of useless crap for me. It's either sent to a UHH member for postage or tossed in the landfill for me.

Andy

It is PNP with no setup required on Windows. What is your O/S?

If you can't be bothered to read beyond the OP, there's really no point in answering. Just look at the post immediately above yours.

Enough....

Windows 10 has built in backup software. Have you tried that ?
