I used a heavy sock. It was a clean one.

I certainly hope so, Kathy. You wouldn't want to "de-feet" the purpose.

I would just buy the cheapest UV filter available for my lens size and keep it in the bag (assuming it is cheaper than a $35 lens cap). That way, if I lose a lens cap and have no replacement available, just screw on the filter and voila! Then, of course, remove the cheap glass before shooting! ;-)

Nothing at all, doug. That is, after all, what both Morning Star and "dougbev3" are referring to. It just seems that most "seasoned" shooters I know don't want the general public to think that they are so absent minded as to need such a thing (especially on a 300-500), or to see one dangling from their expensive photo gear.

But they are LOL

I just realized that I have a replacement lens cap ready for my 18--200 mm lens but that will not help with the 300--500 mm lens cap that I lost.

OMG, What to do?, What to do?

Who cares what the "general public" thinks about how we choose to protect our gear.
I, for one, don't. Just like I don't care what they think if I wear a plaid-fabric blouse with a floral-printed skirt... (just don't tell my mother, she'd make me take one or other off and replace it with a plain fabric garment).

Camera stores sell 'anti loss lens cover keepers' . These items consist of a rubberized band with a plastic tab that sticks to the lens cover. Online stores sell them also. Earlier in the summer I lost a filter for one of my lenses . Luckily, a few weeks later I found it in my car. As photographers, we get caught up in the moment.

The only "anti loss lens cover keepers" I've seen were cheaply made. The connecting cord either broke or detached easily from the tab, the adhesive on the tab was extremely ineffective, and the quality of the materials in general were cheap. I'll stick with the lens cap in the pocket routine.

I do not use them as I grew tired of taking them off and on. I hated having the cap hanging when it was in use too so away they went. 35 bucks I would say someone is ripping you off. Shop around for one. If I have your size I would sell it for half that and be elated. I handle my lens like babies and have never had an issue dropping them and breaking/scratching glass.

What?! Get a new one. I know some photographers the first thing they do is through it away. They say that is what the add on filters are for. But me I always put it in my pocket immediately. Start that habit and you will be so much happier. I also have replacements in the bag. It will fit any lens with the same size MM on the end. You can buy lots of cheap generic lens caps on Amazon too.

What would you do? Here is what happen. I was down by the river taking comparison shots with a Nikon DX with a super zoom on it and an Olympus Micro 4/3 with a super zoom. But that’s not the story.

The problem is that I broke one of my cardinal rules. “When you take the lens cap off it is immediately placed in your pocket.” I broke the rule and placed the lens cap on the hood of the card. I finished the shoot and drove home. Less than a mile. That evening I drove to the store. Less than three houses down the street this black thing comes flying up at the windshield. I flinch thinking it is a bird about to hit the car. Upon returning home I have that sick feeling, did I put the lens cap back on the lens? Quick check, no lens cap on the Nikon superzoom. Quick go out and walk down the street. No lens cap. Check the next morning. No lens cap. Ask the neighbors. No lens cap. Crap, there goes a quick thirty five dollars.

So for me at home it means a telephone call to B&H to order a new one but my question what would you do if you were on a safari or some other location far removed from a quick replacement?

An old military secret.... use a condom. They will stretch and fit almost any size lens you have. PS don't use the lubricated ones.

Maybe not wise to go shooting on laundry day.
