Why do you even need a lens cap?
On many of my lenses I use old UV filters. I unscrew them to shoot or leave them off.
The biggest most expensive lenses don’t have caps or filters. They just don’t make them!
Put a piece of plastic bag on it using a rubber band!!!

I would buy new lens cap as soon as possible and remember to put the lens cap in my pocket the next time.

Motel disposable shower caps work well too.

What would you do? Here is what happen. I was down by the river taking comparison shots with a Nikon DX with a super zoom on it and an Olympus Micro 4/3 with a super zoom. But that’s not the story.

The problem is that I broke one of my cardinal rules. “When you take the lens cap off it is immediately placed in your pocket.” I broke the rule and placed the lens cap on the hood of the card. I finished the shoot and drove home. Less than a mile. That evening I drove to the store. Less than three houses down the street this black thing comes flying up at the windshield. I flinch thinking it is a bird about to hit the car. Upon returning home I have that sick feeling, did I put the lens cap back on the lens? Quick check, no lens cap on the Nikon superzoom. Quick go out and walk down the street. No lens cap. Check the next morning. No lens cap. Ask the neighbors. No lens cap. Crap, there goes a quick thirty five dollars.

So for me at home it means a telephone call to B&H to order a new one but my question what would you do if you were on a safari or some other location far removed from a quick replacement?

I seldom use lens caps these days. I use a clear filter instead. With a Xume magnetic adapter, putting on and off takes no time.

When my dad bought me a wristwatch he said ' when you wash your hands put the watch in your trouser pocket NOT on the sink - that way you will never leave it.'

That advice has stuck through wedding rings and all sorts of 'small items'.

so put the small stuff in your trouser pocket!!!! you can feel it better than in a jacket pocket so it reminds you to 'put it back on'.

most camera shops have a generic equivalent lens cap. OR go to a local beauty spot...pick one off the ground!

I remember when newbies used to put a "leash" on their kit lens caps that attached to the lens so they wouldn't get lost. Would look hilarious on a 300-500.

Losing the cover for my bulbous 14-24 made me nervous so, lens in hand, trotted down to Home Depot and found a lightweight, aluminum pipe cap that, after adding a glued in felt liner, fits just fine.... and works still, today. I'm sure there were other items in the store that would have worked just as well or, given a few minutes I could have fashioned something out of just about anything- given "tools" sharp, pointed and/or sufficiently stiff...

I never use a lens cap on the lens that is on the camera. I always use a clear Protector filter on the lens and always use a lens hood and I only reverse the hood when I put the camera in the case. That has been enough protection for me for many years. I find lens caps a pain. However, I do use them when I store the lens but when I take the lens out of the case I always put the lens cap back in the case as this lens will become my "lens on the camera". When I return the lens to the case the cap is always there.

Why not? I should have known. I use duct tape for all my other repairs. Thanks ELNikklr and all the others for replying to my lens cap predicament. I really did learn some new tricks.

I would go on Ebay and order a generic lens cap that's the right size.

I did that after taking the lens cap off of my Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 at Bad Water Basin in Death Valley. A gust of wind blew it out of my hand and across the eco-friendly walking deck. I chased the cap across the deck, only to have it fall through the crack between the boards. When I got home I went on Ebay to order a new Tamron lens cap; it cost $13! No way! I ordered a generic lens cap for a lot less. A few days later my "generic" Canon lens cap arrived in the mail. I put the Canon lens cap on my Tamron lens which sits on my Nikon camera.
