I prefer Pentax. In body optical stabilization means a vast array of older lenses available for experimentation.

Pete ... that makes a great deal of sense ... all current Pentax models employ IBIS ... as do all Sony models (ILC AND MILC) ...

For those getting older ... the more stabilization applied at the camera "box" level - the better ...

But for those younger ... I suspect ILIS - is the better way to go ... it's only tough holding it still when you have a really long lens, after all ...

Nikon and Canon bodies rely totally on stabilization in the lens, only ... which makes the glass more expensive - in most cases ...

But, then - come to think of it ... just how many 800mm lenses, do Sony and Pentax offer, anyway? ...

Don't believe everything you read on the internet. They have been around a long time and I bet many more years. If they stopped making cameras today the ones I have will last me many years. My old film cameras are still clicking and have not been made in many years. Pentax is just not a cookie cutter camera maker.

Now, you've said that, Wayne ... undoubtedly - Ricoh will debut a camera in the shape of a Cookie Cutter ...

Oh, btw ... whatever happened to that cute Pentax K-S1 ... in blue denim texture, with the neat LEDs all the way down the shutter-button edge?

Incidentally ... I am a proud owner of a Pentax 67 ... and plan to be - for the rest of my life, too ...

AND, I'm saving - for a 645Z ...

I have not read the seven pages of responses in this thread and I hope someone has already brought this point up, do any of your friends or family members have Nikon, Canon or Pentax equipment? If so, select that brand of camera if they have lens or accessories that you could try out before you buy. Another reason to pick that brand would be if you have questions they might be able to answer. If no one close has equipment that you can borrow, just consider yourself the leader of the pack and find the camera that works and feels best for you. Rent each one of your selections for a week. They are all good starter cameras.

Seven pages, already, Strange? ... my, oh, my ... and I haven't even had breakfast, yet! ...

But, I'll bet at least 3-4 of them, is me strutting my stuff - if you know what I mean ... me and Alan Myers ... we do BOTH go on and on ...

Strange ... if you look at my Signature ... your question is answered right there ...

And, yes ... I'm aware of your point, and this is why I'm limiting this to Nikon, Canon and Pentax - the only current APS-C DSLR manufacturers ...

If I buy her any of those four - K-70, T7, SL2, D3400/D3500 ... she will be able to use my lenses ...

The word about the web from who?

You know how rumors get started, don't you, Tropics?

One person says something to someone else ... and all of a sudden, it's on the Net, and it's Gospel!!!!

It tickles my funny bones, sometimes ... especially when it comes to ... nope - not going there ...

Pentax INVENTED the DSLR - they're not going ANYWHERE !!!!

There, now ... add THAT to your Bible ...

Tamron 18-300, Shang? ... Typo, or is that a much older lens?

I have a Tamron 70-300, and have been seriously thinking about picking up a Tamron 18-400 - but, it's only made for Nikon and Canon ...

There's a Sigma 18-300 which has been made for Pentax mount, I believe, though ... is that the one you mean?

Also, Tamron made a 16-300, but - not sure it was made available for Pentax ... will have to check ... nope ... not available for Pentax.

Tamron also made the 70-300 Macro - in a Pentax mount ...

I am using Sigma 18-300mm . I thought the Tamron had same or similar one. Shang

Here is a good comparison of the three best contenders according to what I've see on this thread. No opinions. As SGT. Friday used to say, "just the facts and only the facts". Good luck in your quest.

On the basis of my 3years experience of shooting. Of course I did study other candidates and visited local camera shops. I feel Pentax K 70 is the best value and it is not too big or heavy but built like an armored vehicle ( not a tank) Haha. Shang

Okay, Shang ... so it was a matter of build quality alone, was it? ...

I know what you mean, though ... my own K-50 feels really solid in the hand ... but it doesn't FEEL heavy - yaknow?

The best part of the K-70 ... the way I understand it - is the sophisticated electronics - inside the IBIS box ... wow!!!!

Based on comments made here, that's on my list, now ... whatever I choose for my lady ...

One easy suggestion is not to consider Pentax. The word about the web is that Pentax is on its way out.
They have stopped innovating and relying on their existing product camera line.

Pentax may not be advertising much, but their users and customers are very loyal. There are numerous "Pentaxians" out there in photographer land who swear by their cameras. Yes I am one and will continue to use them for as long as I can hold a camera. Too many "Canikon" users have the opinion that the name is what makes a difference. The same sentiment was around when I bought my first film SLR. Many thought that Nikon, Mamiya, Minolta and a few others were the best. So I rebelled and bought a Petri. How many can say they have even heard of that camera company before. Believe it or not I still own a Petri with accessories and it still functions nearly perfectly. The glass is clear and the lenses respond quickly and provide sharp focus. I also own a Pentax K1000 SE which functions perfectly with clear glass and proper actions. They both are work hose type cameras and have been with me for years. My DSLRs are both Pentax K-x models which have operated very well for me and take excellent photos.

There are many others out there who will agree with me and we will help keep Pentax around for years to come. Also, Pentax developed and presented a FF DSLR just last year. That should pique the interest of some folks. Don't count Pentax out for a long time, the company may surprise you.

Everybody always says this. Go to a camera store, check out the feel for each camera etc. Show me a camera store that will let you check out 4 different cameras (if they have all 4 in stock) plus have some salesman willing to spend buku time explaining all the pros and cons to a beginner ! Maybe in the dim distant past...... but I live in Chicago, and of the few camera stores left (including Central) this just aint gonna happen !!

Gray ... I know what you mean ... used to be a bunch of little camera shops in this part of the world, too ... but, they're all gone, now ...

To find a "little camera shop" now ... you'd have to go to New Haven area ... here, it's all Best Buy, Costco, BJ's et al ...

And those stores don't have every brand ... Nikon, Canon ... maybe a Sony or two ... Pentax? ... not likely ...

Best thing you can do - is order on-line, and hope for the best ... if you don't like it, when you get it - you can always return it ...

I purchased my first Pentax in 1980..and have stayed loyal to Pentax. Quality and affordability have kept me with this line...along with the fact that I own several K mount lens ! Like any other serious, amateur photographer...I have all the items I need to help obtain great photos...tripod, monopod, platypod and remote trigger. I have friends who have Canons and Nikons and would not consider anything else...Checkout all your choices, including the mirror-less entries in the market.

Oh, I see ... harping on THAT one, again - are you?

Thanks ... but that's about three years old, now - right?

Only but the latest technology for my lady ...

Do you mind?

I hear ya, PH ... there are a lot of Pentax lovers around ... doubt they'll be going anywhere, anytime, soon ...

One guy even wrote a song with a line in it about a Pentax camera ... they'll live forever ... as will that song, undoubtedly ...

I am a proud owner of a Pentax 67 ... which I've had for about 30 years, now ... and I have a K-50 ... which I love to death!!!

Yes, me, too, VKB .. no, actually ... it may have been a little later ... closer to 1990 ... my 6x7 ...

And, when I decided to go with an IBIS body - the K-50 was my first choice ... then, my Sony SLTs ...

I am definitely NOT going Mirror-less ... dealing with EVFs in my SLTs - is as close as I want to get ...

Besides, this will be for my lady ... and I want her to have the "latest and greatest" in a beginner camera - so she can use my lenses ... okay?

Oh, okay, Shang ... nope ... just that 16-300 ... which IS available in Sony a-mount, but was never made for Pentax ...

And the newer 18-400? ... just made for Canon and Nikon ... sorry ...

Do you get a lot of vignetting with that Sigma, on your Pentax, or no?
