I watched the online Nikon Z6/7 Hands-on Panel Discussion (twice) as well as watched or read user reviews on numerous web sites, but I still don’t understand why I should want or need this new mirrorless camera. I currently own a Nikon D810 and two Nikon Df’s along with a variety of AI-S, D, G and E lenses. What are the compelling reasons why I should add this camera to my current Nikon product collection or replace one of my existing cameras? And if for some reason I need a mirrorless camera, wouldn’t I be better off buying a Fujifilm XT2 with a Nikon F mount converter?

The only reason I can think of is maybe one would like a smaller and lighter system.

Here's why I need a Nikon Z (but not the Z6/Z7):

Quiet or silent shutter
Highlight/shadow display in the viewfinder (for exposure control)
In camera stabilization (for lower shutter speeds)
Smaller/lighter body
Magnified view with crop exposures

And I would love if they implement a feature like Olympus Pro Capture, which allows capturing action after the fact.

What is the compelling technical reason to switch in the first place? And if there were one relevant to your circumstances, don't you think you would already made the jump with Sony or Fuji?

Consider the investment in lenses, flashes, triggers, and other accessories.

Of course, if you just have a camera and one or two lenses and don't shoot flash, then jumping around is fine. And people do it. But then the reason either needs to be really compelling, or you don't need to justify your expenses.

When all else fails, it boils down to just G.A.S.. Not like we haven't seen that before.
The real test will be how many Sony or Fuji shooters switch to Nikon.

It is not always GAS. There are many situations where I don't shoot with a DSLR because of the noisy shutter. Mirrorless shutters are generally quieter without the mirror slap, and mirrorless allows the use of electronic (silent) shutter.

I have a wait and see approach to the Z cameras; testing with the pre-production models revealed several issues, likely firmware correctible. I'm waiting to see if they get fixed before release or with a timely firmware update (not generally Nikon's forte).

I am still trying to understand the technology of the Z line. I need to hold one and shoot it before I decide. I shoot many action shots of birds and motocross and am satisfied with my results. Will the Z do the same. I listened to Steve Perry so far. will wait until they are in my local camera store.

This holds true with any camera. Same thing with clothes, musical instruments, carpentry tools, etc.

If you are satisfied now, what reason would you have to change? For the newest thing that you only want to be the same? Give me a break, please.

For all those who think any negative review is by folks just paid by other camera companies, listen here to Tony and Chelsea Northrup to know the truth of their impartiality and see early video clips when they used to criticize Sony, before Sony listened and improved. They aren't paid and accept no free gear from anyone. BTW Chelsea's main camera right now is a Nikon D850. Cheers

Most everyone agrees and is objective in stating that the Z6/7 are one of Nikon's worst in a long time, perhaps THE worst (other than maybe the Nikon 1 system). For $200 you are FAR better off with a D850 in terms of bang for the buck and quality and many other reasons (assuming you stay in the Nikon family with a high glass investment). Ken the angry photographer called these Z cameras "turd muffins". For someone looking for a full frame mirrorless he recommended Sony over these Z cameras, and that's coming from a man with Nikon tattooed on his hand and HATES Sony. These Z cameras are in the twilight zone - priced too high for most amateurs and enthusiasts and not high enough caliber for a seasoned pro (yes due to single slot but also for other reasons - poor AF and buffer performance.)...Someone who might want these cameras (one with "more money than brains" he said LOL) - other than that someone looking for a lightweight camera for traveling and has two Bentley's parked in their garage LOL....

Only single slot too .... can't call it "pro" without 2 slots! But it may be better in other areas than the Z system, over 5600 focus points! Let's see if the AF performance is up to snuff @ 8 fps.

I'm not looking for a mirrorless camera, and not promoting anything. I don't care what everyone gets who thinks they "need" to go mirrorless. But your statement that it "can't be called "pro" with only one card slot" is patently silly.

No it's not - just ask a wedding photographer, or any mission critical assignment photographer....most pros will probably not buy this camera either (as a primary camera).
