Why Do I Need a Nikon Z Camera?

I watched the online Nikon Z6/7 Hands-on Panel Discussion (twice) as well as watched or read user reviews on numerous web sites, but I still don’t understand why I should want or need this new mirrorless camera. I currently own a Nikon D810 and two Nikon Df’s along with a variety of AI-S, D, G and E lenses. What are the compelling reasons why I should add this camera to my current Nikon product collection or replace one of my existing cameras? And if for some reason I need a mirrorless camera, wouldn’t I be better off buying a Fujifilm XT2 with a Nikon F mount converter?

If you want a mirrorless camera instead of DSLR then the Z6 or Z7 allow you to use your existing lenses better than the Fuji also since they are FX your lenses for the D810 and Df would give you the same view. But you must want a mirrorless otherwise you don't need them.

Because you have money to burn might be one reason.

No one needs a Nikon Z camera, no one needs any camera, its what someone wants and no one needs to explain why!

I am with you. Why?
I don't know.
I have 3 Canon older 1D and 1Ds bodies, that take stunning pictures.
Add 5 L lenses to that. And a couple of Tamron G2's.
Now I am supposed to sell all of this for pennies on a dollar, to get the newest, coolest camera ever made?{until next years newest, coolest model}
I don't think so. I will keep what I have.
I will bet American money, that if you took the same shot with the Z and my camera. You wouldn't be able to tell them apart.

I don't need a camera but there are people who do need cameras. If you make a living taking pictures you would need camera/cameras. If you are a Nikon ambassador then you do need to have the Nikon Z.

I believe you knew the answer before you asked the question, but here goes. You do not need a mirrorless camera unless you are having trouble with the current camera bodies you already have. In my opinion, the only advantage to a mirrorless camera is a lighter weight, which I am not presently having trouble with. Imagine the expense you would have to go through to change systems, and the F mount converter you would need for the Nikon Z or Fujifilm XT2 would be a compromise not a solution.

If you say the only advantage of mirrorless is lighter weight then the OP would save very little weight with the Z. Compare with the OP Df's it weighs 707g and the Z6 weighs 585g and if he adds the FTZ to use his F mount lenses then there is no weight saving.

You spent a lot of time deciding you don't want this camera. Then some more time telling us you don't want it. Nothing much about the camera, though, or why I may or may not want it.

Tell us more about how you don't want a Miata or a new washer-dryer set. I'm sure there are many more things you do not want or need.

The F mount converter for the Z cameras will not support autofocus with the D lenses unless they say AF-S on the lens. I have four D lenses that rely on the motor in the body of my Nikon D810, and I'm not interested in replacing them. I'm just going to guess that the Fuji F mount converter isn't going to have a motor in it either. I'm not interested in spending more money in general right now to get to essentially the same point for me. Also, a lighter body isn't going to lighten up my lenses and may make the whole setup seem unbalanced. (Just a guess.)

I like your point. Nikon marketing should be able to convince their audience, especially enthusiastic Nikon users like me, that they must have this brand new shiny thing because it is much better than anything else they have ever made. They cannot because it is not yet better than existing product. On one of the other many posts on this topic I was wondering if Nikon is totally committed to mirrorless or just dipping their toe in the water to see how committed they should be. They might have released it in order not to fall too far behind others like Sony. In any case, I thought this review was very telling:

Sounds to me like you really want it.
The only reason I see for getting this camera is for fun, and to be updated with the latest tech.
I will say this when I upgraded from d800 to D850 my photography improved and so did the enjoyment of my photography. No more neck cramping because of flip screen, light up buttons reduced fumbling around, sharper screen made it easier to get stars in focus, the ability to use my manual focus lenses was more enjoyable, photographing wildlife is much improved, the blacks and detail are improved, the ability to tap the back screen and have the camera take a silent image and shutter stays open till I touch it again has been a breakthrough for my long exposure and night imagery. The increase dinamic range is a blessing, no more purple shadows, and cleaner images.
You never know how a camera may change how you see the world or feel about photography.
It is compelling to think about and these differences are not realized until you shoot with it.
We live only once this camera sounds interesting to say the least.
Get it and tell us how you like it.

Mirrorless cameras have special applications that dSLRs can't handle. Unless you need them for those special applications, you don't need them:

* Work absolutely silently in a dark theatre, with no light from a rear screen to disturb patrons behind you. (EVF plus electronic shutter = stealth mode!)
* Do vibration-free macro work at long shutter speeds with remote control via WiFi and a smartphone app. (mirrorless design plus electronic shutter + WiFi = no vibration!)
* Do nature photography silently and remotely (mirrorless design plus electronic shutter + WiFi = remote control of a silent camera!)
* NEVER have to "fine tune a lens" to your camera bodies' focusing systems. (Focus sensing happens in the imaging sensor of a mirrorless, so if it's in focus in the EVF or OLED LCD, it's in focus!)
* Clean your sensor much less often. (No mirror means no mirror to fan flying droplets of lubricants, or metal shavings, or foam particles from the mirror dampener...)
* Record top notch video AND stills with the same camera. (While you can record video with a dSLR, the EVF allows much greater flexibility.)
* Use 4K or 6K still capture modes to work at high frame rates (30-60 frames per second STILLS)

There are many more reasons we mirrorless users love them. Specific brands do different things differently, so to really get a sense of what they do, you have to read the reviews and study the camera manuals (all online at manufacturer web sites).

I can tell you that the Nikon mirrorless will likely adapt F-mount lenses better than any adapter for Fujifilm cameras. We shall see. They'll need that adapter, because they don't plan to release many lenses in the first few years. (Which comes first, the bodies, or the lenses? They can't sell one without the others!)

The vast majority of dSLR owners should keep their gear for now. Wait until the over-eager GAS hogs take the slings and arrows of new technology in the back, and Nikon fixes a few things. If you need a mirrorless next week, go rent a Sony or Olympus or Panasonic or Fujifilm camera. All four have reasonably mature systems. They're all quite different, but they are all cameras.

My philosophy is that I don't need a new camera unless the one I have won't do the job I need. I'm strictly an amatuer. I still use my D5100 I bought in 2013 and still love it.
