Yes, that would have been nice. Oh well, it won't happen again.

Famous Last Words!! At our age, Intellectual Interludes kick in when least expected. I've enjoyed a similar problem trying to remember to turn off
vibration when using a tripod. Still getting slightly fuzzy pictures of "important happenings"
Also, since I'm probably at least a decade older than you, it don't get any better.
However, being on the green side of grass is appreciated.
When I get a new camera, I two changes in the settings. I want the camera to take a picture when I push the shutter button, whether it's in focus or not. The second thing I do is not let it take a picture if there is no memory card.
My sympathies for your predicament.

OK, how many of your would admit to these f--- ups?
1. Took 200 images in Prague, in extremely hot weather (90+ degrees), and discover I had no card inserted. BTW: they were wonderful images.
2. Took about the same number of images in Vienna and discovered no card in the camera.
3. My wife was sick in Budapest so we spent a day in the hotel room. No images.
4. We had one more day after our tour ended (today). Hired a private driver and guide to take us around the city, specifically for photo scenes and vantage viewpoints. He was terrific and added history of the country as we drove from site to site. Fabulous sites!!! Fabulous images!! Get back to hotel, paid him $180 & a $40 gratuity for three hours. Could not wait to get back to hotel room to review the images. Guess what? No images!! For the 3rd time, NO Card!!
I could not understand why I did not receive a "no card" warning and how the camera took images without a card. Took out the book (Alexander White) and discoverd I had not enabled the feature in the voluminous menu. DUH!! DUH!!. My father, only in jest, used to day to me, "you're getting dumber by the day"! He was right!!
I'll soon recover and forgive myself.

Very Sorry for your terrible misfortune, hope you may have another opportunity to recapture those lost images in your future travels. They say; "A lesson learned is a lesson remembered" I have made many Photography mistakes and some I have repeated and some I have not, so as you see, I am still learning too.

OMG, why wouldn't the warning be the default? I am so sorry for your loss. Wow!
One of the videos on lynda.com recommends spending a day shooting without a card. Don't worry about the results. Concentrate on composition and technique.
Hi,
Thanks for the reply. The only plausible explanation is we were running a bit late for those daily tours and in a rush. It was careless on my part. I do not always format a card after a days shoot. I had my laptop with me and uploaded images each day. I left the card in the laptop's reader. Mark

That's very unfortunate, I'm a bit confused though. Where was the card? If you took it out to download images to a computer or other device, when you were finished as matter of course wouldn't you have put it back in the camera? I'm just trying to get my head around the circumstances that would have lead to this happening three times regardless of whether or not there was a no-card warning. I don't recall you every mentioning this happening before with your other cameras. I've screwed up plenty myself. We hopefully learn from our mistakes.

Why would you admit this to the whole world if you didn't expect to get some ribbing from us. Canon cameras have the same feature. Why don't you start doing what I do before you leave to take pictures? It only takes a minute to check your equipment and settings. Or make a list and check it off.

Feel for you, Mark. No regrets, Dude. Regret is a waste of time. Just learn from it and make some more terrific images to share with us.

To err is human, to really screw up takes a memory card. The thing is you still have the experience in Europe and, most important, your wife. You've just proven your humanity.
Wait a minute! Wait just a goldarned minute!!
I just checked my RX10 iv after removing the card. First, there was a flashing msg on the screen and in the viewfinder, "NO CARD." Then I tried to take a photo and it would not. Instead I got a msg that filled the screen, "Cannot open the shutter since the memory card is not inserted." I have not changed any such setting since getting the camera, did not know you could so AFAIK the default is to show the msg and prevent taking a pic w/o the card.
My theory is that you got a camera that was returned within a free trial period and the person had changed the setting to NOT display msgs as a kind of cruel practical joke.
Thanks. I do not hold on for very long. I'm not laboring in guilt. Tomorrow affords another opportunity to screw up.

Sorry for your misfortune. Hope the memories will provide some solace. But why the heck after the first misstep didn't you do a visual check of the card slot before venturing out?
