Wings, very good job straight out of the box. What is the minimum focusing distance on this camera? I like to do macro, but don't have a macro lens. I use my P&S for that at the moment. Thanks for your reply.

Minimum focus is actually 0 cm, but only at the wide angle setting. True Macro requires a close up lens like the Raynox 150 or something similar.

Thank you

This was taken with a Pansy about an inch so so from the lens.

You woud not have too much trouble with the one for this SX40 as it has very few pages.
Fantasticshots.
I hope a bunch of the folks who were putting down these bridge cameras see these.

Those are nice shots, what part of the camera are you unfamiler with?

The whole camera...I just took the camera out of the box and never read the manuel...just put it on automatic and went out to point & shoot. lol
Bring your photography to the next level and read the manual, find out what the differnt settings are for...shutter speed, apeture, iso. You'll be surprised what you can do. Buy a book on exposure. Don't go through life taking pics on "auto" mode.

I take photo's explicitly on manual with my Canon DSLR...just wanted to try this camera right away...so tried it on auto. Will read the manual when I get it loaded on my computer and have more time. Unfortunately, most of us women prefer to learn through trial and error as opposed to reading the manual. lol

I got news for you...so do men.

Oh that's too funny...and all these years I thought men faithfully read all their manuals...for cars cameras and whatever ;)

What is a "manual"? Hopefully you don't mean a book to read!! I just file those for times when I have trouble, never have completely read one, and NEVER before using the product!!

All very nice shots. Yesterday there was a post regarding shooting with P&Ss that you should really look at. Begs once again to ask the question is it the camera or the person behind it?? The post was under the "Photo Gallery" and entitled "Before I Knew What I was Doing" P&S Thread.........

How about a couple telephoto ones?

Hand-held with back against a building for support. Includes digital zoom.

How about "BOTH" one can't possibly work well without the other being of quality also. Yes - on a rare shot but not constantly. or as constant as any quality photographer can be.
IMHO

on the sparrow shot how far away from the bird were you? was that a macro shot on the dragonfly. fantastic. On some of my bird shots using manual(sx40), i have been trying to get that soft background as on the sparrow shot which makes it pop.But not always successful. for our pro viewers and users of the sx40,what settings on manual would one use to get the soft background effect as on his sparrow picture? Thanks!!

I've had my SX 40 for about 2 months and couldn't be more happy with it. Recently took it to South Dakota and that 800mm zoom came in very handy! Quality of shots is superb!

Personally I am not interested in the RAW capability, but with the CHDK program on the SD card, the SX40 will save in RAW format. This CHDK program/hack does nothing to the internal firmware but makes it possible to save in RAW, use a Remote Release and a number of other features. I am really beginning to think about getting the CHDK for remote release purposes.
