I understand that there are individuals that need voice activation on things, but... I think most of the marketing and use is going to the lazy for inconsequential uses, asking the weather may be important to some as they get dressed in the morning but if you need Alexa to order your overpriced coffee for you , you really need to get your ?:< out of bed earlier!

I bet I get roasted on that one but I couldn't help myself.

Hey not bothering me one bit. They wouldn't be in my house had they not been a Christmas present (and may not be much longer.) Not something I would have spent $$$ on.

Iā€™m a ā€œtechno geekā€ of the first order, but I wouldn't have one in my house - I can actually still walk to the light switch. Some home automation devices are useful such as automatic controls for lighting for security purposes or automatic drip watering for plants, but the burgeoning IOT (internet of things) is going from cute/silly to potentially harmful as every new device is another hackerā€™s potential target. Do we really need an internet connected refrigerator to tell me how many eggs I have without opening the door? Really? As was said previously, Orwell was prescient - just a little off on the date.

I covered my camera on my laptop with tape for that exact reason, spying, and I don't have any mics for the same reason.

I totally agree with you, the whole idea of internet connected stuff just makes no practical sense, except its just something else for the marketing department to hawk to the unwashed masses. (If you can't be good, be loud.)

My fingers and eyes still work, so I do not need a device like this - but I would love to have both an Alexa and a Siri together and see if I could get them going into a conversation with each other...... "Siri - does Alexa suck?" "yes - Alexa sucks" From Alexa: "No - YOU suck" and so on. Could get very interesting!

Wonderful idea.

Big Brother has been listening for decades. As for Smart devices, don't need them, like them or trust them with my electronic life. My computer is only hardline connected when I'm on it, otherwise disconnected. My Wi-Fi devices are all on "airplane mode", shut off from the world when I'm not on them. If you are going to hack me, I'm not going to make it easy! SB - I remember a South Park cartoon episode about those devices....I think you've got something there!

And - The FBI (still a valuable organization in my book) just issued an alert to all the banks about a worldwide ATM hack that is in the works. Be aware!

Absolutely. I've been in the computer business all my life, and almost everyone in our offices taped their laptop cameras.

Anyone remember this? This posting caused a stir when someone noticed the tape over the Webcam and mic of Mark Zuckerberg's laptop.
