FYI. Your cell phone does same thing. If I drive by a restaurant more than a few times a week, I get notices about favorite places with them on top. Cameras at intersections, stores, discount offers track buying habits. Who knows what else. 1984 deja vu all over again.

It's really scary, I'm getting messages from Google map giving directions, traffic and ETA to my destination without giving it any prompt. On certain days I go and have coffee with friends and on Sunday mornings I go to church and on those days, without any prompt it will give my destination, traffic and time of arrival, this thing has programmed my activities, really spooky! And it only does it when I get in my car and start out the driveway!

There are reports that Alexa sometimes misinterprets background words as the 'wake' word so that lights her up. I don't have my Alexa Echo device anywhere near a TV, radio or near a computer that would cause her to wake up due to background words she/it might hear. I don't think she/it has ever gone rogue on me. It's wise to be cautious though.

Yeah I've seen that story. That's what I said above; "Its not a bug, its a feature!"

At one time I read that bugs were "Randomly appearing Features" VBG

First let me say this is a true story. My son gave my wife and I a couple of Amazon Alexa echo devices for Christmas 2017. One sits in our bedroom and the other is at my wife's computer. For the most part Alexa gets ask by my wife for a weather report and that's about it.

The end of last week while in our bedroom I commented to my wife I needed to buy a new pair of shoes as the ones I wear on an almost daily basis were getting a bit worn. We talked about it for maybe 2 minutes with my wife suggesting I go on line and shop for the brand and size I wanted. As with many things, procrastination took over and as of today I have not done anything further about said shoe purchase.

This morning my wife ask if I had found the shoes I wanted since much of her media like Facebook is now covered with adds for the shoe brand I favor. I assured her I had done nothing more about the shoes and ask had she been looking for me. And neither of us has done anything about a shoe purchase other than the conversation we had within earshot of one of the Alexa devices; and to further confirm our suspicions the Alexa hardware is routed through her computer not mine and I have no shoe adds in anything I'm looking at online.

So food for thought.

Was Alexa turned off when you had the discussion, if not, you have your answer about big brother.

Scary, indeed. Can they be used as evidence against you, someday?[/quote

Or in your favor?

My fingers and eyes still work, so I do not need a device like this - but I would love to have both an Alexa and a Siri together and see if I could get them going into a conversation with each other...... "Siri - does Alexa suck?" "yes - Alexa sucks" From Alexa: "No - YOU suck" and so on. Could get very interesting!

I asked Siri to find a certain kind of fiction for me and "she" replied, That's not nice. AI will eventually take over.

Oooohh I like SB's idea. Hopefully it would form an infinite loop and crash the whole system. I have Siri disabled on both my iMac and iPhone...and a piece of black electrical tape covering the lens on both. Now I hear my smart TV may be eavesdropping on me? Sheesh; next they'll be tracking what brand of coffee I use and how much I drink, through my coffee maker.

Right. Every few days there is a news item about something Alexa overheard and acted upon. Remember that little girl who said she wanted a certain toy, and two days later, Amazon delivered it?

"Can you play dollhouse with me and get me a dollhouse?"

Perhaps we need a alternate voice that's not so puritan, Salome has some historical nastiness to it

Alexa is powered via its USB cable but the way things are supposed to work is if you want Alexa to do something like tell you the current weather you are supposed to call it by name first to activate. At that point Alexa lights up and connects to the internet. So no, neither of us during the conversation ask Alexa to check anything out.

I understand that there are individuals that need voice activation on things, but... I think most of the marketing and use is going to the lazy for inconsequential uses, asking the weather may be important to some as they get dressed in the morning but if you need Alexa to order your overpriced coffee for you , you really need to get your ?:< out of bed earlier!

I bet I get roasted on that one but I couldn't help myself.
